Turntable belt types
« on: 12 May 2013, 08:09 pm »
Hi folks,

I just grabbed an Origin Live DC motor kit, and the pulley, adjustable controller and external motor pod allow me a lot of flexibility in terms of what belt I can use. So I figure it is time to tap into the collective wisdom of AC.

Here are the options that seem available based on my set-up and this versatile new pulley.

1) Round Rubber Belt (that's what I am currently using-stock belt for the Townshend Rock)
2) Thread belt. I have read some people like silk thread (possibly waxed for extra grip), and others have recommended carpet thread.
3) Dual belts. I can run a belt at the top of the pulley and a second at the bottom of the pulley.
4) Flat belt. This is the type of belt that Townshend provides with their own (pricey) DC motor upgrade.

Any advantages or disadvantages to any of these? Preferences? Advice?

Look forward to your thoughts.

The main thing affecting speed is the thickness of the belt.
So the thread will definitely slow down the speed.
A thick belt will speed it  up.  An O ring has the most potential for adjusting the speed with the belt. and plenty of O Ring gauges available to play with. O Ring belts can be custom ordered.. so any size and diameter can be had.
O Ring material is very uniform, and used in millions of products, so it is basically way cheaper stuff than flat belts
Flat belts have the best grip of all. And need to be carefully made to be even thickness. (thus the cost)
Plus the pulley design. If it is made for a flat belt, it could use O Rings, or Two O Rings side by side.
(IMO the best idea is the use two (or three) O Rings in place of one belt just so they are the same thickess as the belt)

Yes, it is important to note that changing belts will change the speed. Fortunately I have the ability to adjust the speed of my motor through the Origin Live motor controller.

I will look into dual O rings and flat belts some more. Any recs for flat belts with even thickness?

So there is a motor and a controller? The motor fits into your turntable?

Pics?

Yeah, the kit incudes an external transformer, a motor controller,  and a DC motor, which I quickly DIYed an external pod for this weekend. Pics to come, but on my way out the door right now so you will have to stay in suspense. The motors can be dropped in to replace motors on many turntables that do not have external motors.

The controller changes speed from 33 1/3 to 45, and there is a pot for each setting which allows you to adjust the motor speed.

There's a thread on a'gone started by Doug Deacon on the use of mylar for belts.
It might be of interest.
