Will a Sony PS-X6 work on 220/50 mains?

Pretty similar to a PS-X7. Wayner's PS-X7 thread, however, hasn't had any activity since 2010. I didn't want to revive it. And I couldn't pm him. So here goes..

I live in India. The mains voltage & frequency here is 220V/50HZ.

The turntable in question is a 120V/60Z. Here's a link to the turntable.
http://www.thevintageknob.org/sony-PS-X6.html.

According to the user manual on sony's site, the motor is brush-less(and slot-less) DC servo-controlled.

I have read that a turntable with a DC motor isn't dependent on the AC line frequency. But I still wanted to make sure.

The speed locking mechanism, uses a 'barium-ferrite magnetic imprint, 8-pole reading head, X'Tal locking by phase loop and brush-less / slot-less motor.' I do not fully understand that technical description. I have been told that a DC motor requires a rectifier IC to convert ac to dc. Is that what this is?

All I know is that in a belt-drive turntable, you can change the drive pulley, if the motor is an AC synchronous. Since the Sony is a direct drive, I don't know what the alternative would be? Ofcourse, that is already moot. Since the motor is DC. Just asking.

So, in summary, my question is, will I be fine with a step-down transformer?

Sorry you couldn't PM me (no one can). The rear label indicates 120v, 60hz only on both my PS-X5 and PS-X7. According to the service manual for the PS-X7, the innards for a 220v, 50hz are different, so there is just not some internal wires or jumpers that can be moved.

Hi Wayner,
The service manual for the PS-X70 also indicates separate models for 220V.  Do you know, if the voltage is stepped down to 110 but remains at 50 cycles, could this cause damage to try it?

The fact that there are separate models at all tells me I should stay away from the ps-x series. What a shame, since I really wanted one. That the innards are different only makes it more dicey. I am just confused about one thing. If dc motors don't depend of main frequency, what's going on here? Thanks Wayner. And neo. For your inputs.

Because there are separate models for 220/50 and 110/60, it could mean there is only provisions for one voltage in each unit and if you change the voltage, you'd be fine.  I don't know if this is actually the case, but like you say, both the motor and speed control circuitry are DC.

Maybe someone in the lab, another circle here, would know for sure.  I'll see if I can find a confirming answer.
