Best Thiel speakers and Bryston amps mix
« on: 23 Feb 2013, 09:47 am »
Hello,

I was wondering, in a 5.1 Home theater setup, what would be the best Bryston amps for a pair of CS3.7 main speakers and three MCS1 for center and surrounds (all Thiel speakers) ? The room is approximately 6m x 8m and ceiling is 3.5m.

1/ For the CS3.7, would you recommend 7Bs or would 4Bs be enough ?

2/ In case of the higher output, would you recommend two 7Bs or one 14B ?

3/ Can I mix the power levels for mains and surrounds ? For instance a 14B for the CS3.7 and a 6B for the three MCS1. I have read that sometimes people want the same amps for L R and C even if the speakers are diferent.

Thanks a lot in advance !

Hi There,

Know the Thiels well and I would recommend 7B's on the Main left and right speakers and maybe a 6B for the Centers and Surrounds or a 3 channel 9B.

You can mix and match any Bryston amp with another Bryston amp because they all have the same GAIN. Also your processor will allow for volume balances as well.

Thanks James for the advice.

As for the processor my mind is already made on the SP3. To connect the SP3 and the amps, I gues XLR balanced at both ends is the way to go right ? Sorry for what might seem silly questions...

Hi Jacques

Yes I recommend balanced if you havre the option - with all the RF out there it just keeps it out of your audio system

While some things may have changed, the major difference is probably the gain controls - http://bryston.com/PDF/Other/STPRO_NOTES.pdf

Hi,

The pro versions are only available in Black rackmount pro faceplates and have gain (volume) controls in the circuit path on all channels.

Hello

I have new Thiel 3.7s with the Bryston 4bsst2 amplifier.

Would there be a big enough improvement to warrent an upgrade/trade in to the 7b?

Thanks for any info.

Thanks James and Phil !

Would you advise in using a Power conditioner for the amps ?

If I wanted to plug all my gear (two 7Bs, one 6B, one SP3 + a Bluray player, a video processor and say a couple more units) in a Torus Power conditioner, which model would I need ? bit15, bit20 or something even bigger  ?

Thanks a ton in advance !

Hi Jacques

The 7B's really do not need the BIT as they have the BIT type transformers installed in the amp.  The BIT does give you the added protection though.  I would go with the BIT 20 if the budget allows as that way you can experiment with the amps plugged in or not as well as lots of flexibility in the future.
