Thinking about replacing my MMF5 (original version with Goldring 1012GX), not that it sounds bad, but just got the urge to change tables and perhaps try out a vintage suspended rig.

So, which way would you go given that I could get these for about the same price (around $1k plus/minus a $100):
- Fully restored TD-150 or TD-160 with a Rega RB303
- Used but functional TD-126 MKII with a Black Widow arm
- New TD-309

I would go with the restored 150 or 160.
Just a gut reaction, has nothing to do with the sound.
Just like the way they look and I always wanted one when I was in college...

But I would hold on to the MMF5. You can always use two tables!

You can read about the 309 here:

It looks like a better choice to me.

Good review find neo.  It reads like every Thorens table I've heard, competent, middle of the road performer.  Softer and more romantic than detailed and impactful.  Inoffensive doing nothing wrong, but nothing to write home about, no character that created a following, cult or otherwise.  I always liked my Thorens table, but never loved it.  It took VPI to find love.

Well, the TD309 is off the list since I spent too much time reading all the reviews and waited too long to pull the trigger. AudioAdvisor was clearing them out at $999 but they are now gone.

Then I was perusing my local Craigslist and came across a TD-160 in what looked to great condition within a couple miles of my house. Drove over, checked it out and came home with a new toy at a fraction of the cost of what I was considering, probably a better course of action since I've never had a suspended table and this may not work out in the end. I've got wood floors of questionable stability and no wall mount capability at the moment. I've read about the issues with floor vibrations but figured how bad could footfalls be, but I can't walk across the room without skipping.

At $300 I probably spent a bit too much for it, but it was local and I could check it out in person. Owned by the guy's father and still had the original sticker from a local audio store on the back (same place I bought my first high-end system). It's a later TD-160 with the motor guard post under the platter and has the ground-wire mod (originally these were grounded through the right RCA). Everything is in great condition, runs well, no runout or noise on the motor, and even the original dust cover is in good condition with some scratches on the top but no stress fractures anywhere. Came with an Ortofon OM cartridge but no stylus (slapped an old AT100E on it to give it a test run).

May consider upgrading the arm at some point but not until I solve the footfall issues.

Stephen Meijas in Stereophile had a column about the sensitive turntable that he tamed with Vibrapods. Inexpensive, easy thing to try.

That's a great looking table!
You can ask questions at vinyl nirvana dot com. Bet he has good advice!

I've got a TD-125 from Vinyl Nirvana with SME 3009 and am very happy with it.  Got a pair of TD-124s too.  Diff. sound but tons of fun as well.  Keeping one stock and doing all the swissonor mods to see how much diff there is.

The work of Dave at Vinyl Nirvana got me started on this jag. His tables look awesome and I'm sure sound just as good. Got to get my table location sorted out then I would love to get one of his tables and/or tweak out one of my own.

Wow, some really nice stuff Jeff! Have you posted pics of your 124s in your magazine/Facebook/forums? Cheers

Thorens/SME was SOTA in the late 1960s and early 1970s and IMO is an excellent choice. I considered buying that combination myself. It was between that and Empire. Strangely at a trade show the Thorens/SME sales rep told me I'd be equally happy with Empire so I went that way. No regrets but I think I'd be happy with that setup too.
