I didn't realize that home subwoofers have been around since the 1960's and initially were developed for movie theaters.

It was a Velodyne 12 inch. It had good extension to about 26hz, very nice for HT.

Design Acoustics 12" PS-LF as part of the PS-30 sub/sat system which I bought new around '88. Still have the cabinet but the driver surround rotted out and was tossed long ago (got a couple of cheap sub drivers from PE that I'm planning to use to create an isobaric sub just for fun).

My first subwoofer was a Hartley 24" driver that I built into wall
(infinite baffle) which was good for down to 16 hz.   I later
used two of these drivers built into the floor in my new home,
which increased the low frequency capability, but still had to watch
the levels (could easily be over driven below 20 hz.
Adding a Velodyne SMS-1 Subwoofer management system
with its subsonic filtering helped from overdiving these
subwoofers, but now I have a rotary subwoofer and there
is absolutely no way I can ever over drive this device.

Mine were a pair of Canton's.

Around 1979-80 I built a 100 liter tower speaker using 2 12" woofers from Philips. I think they were called AD12065 or AD1265 or something like that. I know they came in 4 and 8 ohms as I bought them in 4 ohms and wired them in series.

This was part of an all Philips system using the 8066 mid woofer, 5060 come midrange, 0210 dome midrange, 0163 front tweeter and 0140 rear tweeter. I think the crossover points were 100, 500, 2kHz, and 5kHz with the rear tweeter operating above 15k only. Slopes were all 1st order and inductors were wound on a simple lathe my dad had. The biggest was a huge 12mH inductor using 14SWG wire!!

It was the early eighties fresh out of HS and on a part time minimum wage budget.

2 of these (in stereo!)

powered by (using a car stereo x-o because the built in inductor allowed too much midrange)

1st speakers (only listened to rock)

2nd speakers (way more better ~ discovered I could like other types of music)
