virtual windows pc on Mac: what to watch out for?
« on: 26 Nov 2012, 02:29 pm »
Hi,

Since 2 or 3 programs everybody raves about are not available on the Mac, today I installed a virtual machine (Parallel Desktop) on the Macbook. Now I can try DBpoweramp, Jriver Mediacentre and Gnome MPD player.

Is there anything you would advize me to watch out for? I'm especially interested in preventing file-formatting issues.... formatted my hdd on the BDP1 in fat32, and hope that tagging them with DbPoweramp won't render them useless in the MAc environment.

Other tips/warnings will be appreciated also!

Thanks,
Marius

Note that under Parallels, it si not virtual windows it is real windows. No emulation at all, Parallels glues the Mac hardware to the Windows OS allowing it to be shared.

USB might have some issues -- it doesn't really like being shared.

Its hardware emulation virtualization software via a hypervisor... you both are right :)   There's still SW overhead to deal with, bootcamp will still run faster (i.e. games).

As for tagging, just try a file and check, most likely it will be fine.

Hi,

Yes , had to choose which OS uses the usb when inserted. Havent seen that option yet for browsing the network and the hdds on the bdp1. Will check tonight.
So far ive noticed a serious slowdown of the macbook, but that might have to do with everything running for the first time. Did already have a Windows crash..... Feels like old times  :D

Does look beautiful and works astonishingly well.

Thanks,
Marius

Hi Skunark,

I will try, and realize a standalone windows machine or bootcamp will be faster. I am aiming for the simultaneous use of mentioned programs here, so will take this loss for granted.
Thanks!

Hi Marius,

I've found that more memory usually means a speedier virtual machine, if your running windows 7 or 8 I would recommend you dedicated at least 4GB the vm.

Yep, great tip, it was defaulted at 1 gb. Trying win7 and 8, although I can not bother to go through the learning curve of Win8, how unintuitive can one get

believe to have seen we can run Android on Parallels too? Would be a nice way to try MPDroid  :D

cheers and thanks for the tip,
Marius
