I passed on Thick as a Brick. One of my least favorite Tull albums and I have 90% of their albums.

Am I missing something here? I paid $8 for a pristine used original copy.

OK everybody. You may be missing something here, maybe not. Perhaps TAAB is not for everyone but it happens to be my favorite. In fact, Ian Anderson in an interview said that he does not like to name favorite/least favorite songs from individual albums. He said that each song is somebody's favorite and it only tends to distance his fans when he critiques his own work.

This set is beautiful, the remastering is flat and quite on heavy vinyl. I have not yet listened to TAAB 2, which is also included but the whole package is deluxe. The book is hardcover, has reproduction of the newspaper inside and has stories of the making of the album, etc.

To top it off, I just saw both performed in Detroit a couple of weeks ago and, barring Anderson's loss of the top register of his voice, the presentation was top notch.

For me the box was icing on the cake and I thought you should all know about it. After all, this is a hobby.

YMMV and TEHO. But if you snooze and lose, no one can blame me!

Finally, http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp rates TAAB as the Number 2 prog album of all time, behind Close To The Edge. I'm not one to disagree!

Pass on the new digital TAAB and TAAB2.
A buddy works at a radio station and gave me the demo copies which was good of him.
Maybe the vinyl will sound more like it.
P.S.
You forgot Ian's matching loss of hair...
Seeing Ian's hair loss really makes me feel old (but not as old as he is)!

I love Yes and have all of their albums, but Close to the Edge is not anywhere close to being their best IMHO. Maybe I need to listen to TAAB again. I don't think I have listened to it in over 30 years. My fave Tull ablums are Stand Up, Benefit and Aqualung. YMMV

Close to the Edge was the most pivotal LP in the early 70's, and changed the course of music in the rock era forever. From the first time I ever heard it, I knew the message and now I am but a few that understands the message (hint: 200 women watch one woman cry (too late)).

I saw this concert when the LP came out. It was a time of wonderment. I don't think I've ever felt that feeling since then.

The commentary has been interesting. As some may know, I am a big Move fan and some of the reissues have had previously unreleased stuff, outtakes, etc. So when the box set chronicling the history of The Move, I was right on and just HAD to have it.

Other stuff comes out later on with all kinds of added discs of bonus material and I absolutely don't care. Many times the things that were on the original album are just enough now and forever.

With my being such a big fan of TAAB, this was NOT one of those times. I just HAD to have it!

My Tull order of preference, BTW, is Stand Up, TAAB, Benefit and Aqualung, in that order. I'm a classic Tull kinda guy.

Missed the TAAB 2 concert in Salt Lake City in October, unfortunately. It's a 500 mile drive, but was fully prepared and planning to go with my wife...until the babysitter back out.
Great album.

Paul,

How is the TAAB sound compared to other copies you may have heard? A big improvement?

And musically any one care to comment on TAAB 2?

I thought the sound of the new vinyl was good on its own merits, but did not compare to the American copy I have had since college, the one that I paid 4.98 for...
2 was surprisingly good in concert, some rhythmic/stylistic cues carried forth from the original in a new song cycle. I enjoyed it but have not yet listened to the disk.

I do buy for sound quality when possible but the total package appealed to me on more than just a sonic level.

Speaking of Aqualung, there is a far more deluxe version out than TAAB with multiple CD's, vinyl, etc. but priced too high for me. I have my American college copy and an old MoFi, so I skipped it.

Actually, TAAB runs out around 11PM? on pop market...maybe Aqualung is to follow? Usually they switch over at noon!

I think TAAB 2 is excellent, in spite of Ian's vocal limitations.
It has an old school Tull sound, complete with Hammond organ flourishes and Florian Opahle delivering Martin Barre-esque riffs with all the finesse of Martin himself (IMHO of course).
I was disappointed to hear that Martin wouldn't be touring with Ian on TAAB 2, but it makes perfect sense...both Ian and Martin were tired of the Tull touring track list, Ian wanted something fresh on TAAB 2, and Martin wanted to continue touring but with a different slate of Tull material (which he's doing with New Day, his own band).

I didn't know that, thanks acres!. TAAB2 vinyl spinning right now, sounds good to these ears!

My only tidbit trivia on Tull lately is that Ian's daughter is married to Andrew Lincoln, the star of The Walking Dead!

Orthobiz, I had NO idea Andrew Lincoln was married to Ian's daughter! That's fantastic.
Thanks for that good bit of gossip. I love The WD and Jethro Tull...just didn't realize until now that there was a connection...

I played TAAB last night and it is much better than I had remembered. In fact, it is quite good--good enough that I need to find a clean NM copy to replace mine that got abused back in the day.
