George, as it happens I put some 4" acoustical foam in front of my TV, which is a few feet behind my speakers.  It deadened the sound too much.  I much prefered no foam.  I wonder if you don't have your front wall too dampened, at least between your speakers?

Of course that's why the pots go all the way to "eleven"  (bad Spinal Tap joke there)

Rob,

I thought about that as well...in the end it doesn't really matter where the pots are though.

I have 4" foam on the side walls, but the front wall doesn't have any.  Of course it does have four MiniTraps + some 8th Nerve stuff.

Brian, silly question...is there any long term issues with having the pots at a high level?

George's system was really sounding good today!  I wound up spending an extra hour just listening at the end.

When I first arrived it sounded good, but I wasn't too happy with the bass (no slam, no detail,), the midbass seemed and little weak and vocals had the slightest edge to them. I was honest with George since it does him no good if I just shake my head like a puppet that his system sounds great.

I asked him where his pots were set at and he said "pretty high".  They were really high (almost maxe ...

Frank,

If you don't need the second Quantam, I will take it!

Don't know how or why, but it definitely improves things...

Ben Harper is very, very good without the Quantam, but with it on...it goes back to the magical place we heard earlier today.

The pots can be placed at any setting above 11 o'clock without problem.  Below 11 o'clock there is a lot of signal loss through heat and the pot can become intermittent with heavy use.

George,

You're killing me

I have a pair of African Ebony BCSE RM40s coming in the latest shipment and as much as I love the sound of the 626Rs, I do miss the "HUGE LARGENESS" :shake:  of the 40s

You have me convinced to "biamp" although not quite as exotically as you.  I think I'll be trying the Son of Ampzilla on top with my old favorite CineNova running the Woofs.

Have fun at your meet.

George,

Congratulations on you reaching this level of performance!!!  I guess your having some folks over for a meet appears to make the timing extra special, but the important thing is your long-term "thrill-level".

Since I had a hand in starting you down the path of researching/considering/buying RM40s, I've always watched your postings with extra interest.  It's always dissapointed me that you never acheived the kind of satisfaction I know you were hoping for.  This thread (and the state of mind you're expressing) will finally allow me to think I "did good".

Anyway, good luck with your meet, and again, congratulations on the new sound!!!

Kevin

P.S. - I'm having yet another Tampa meet at my place in 2 weeks (July 31) - it looks to be about 10 people coming this time.  Good luck to both of us.

Saw Sarah McLachlan live last night at the new Glendale Area, center stage about 10 rows back.   Great sound thanks to the giant curved planar-magnetic surface arrays hanging above.

My home system gets very, very, very close when played at realistic volume levels.  How's that for being a pleased customer ?

RM/X with TRT and Analysis Plus, lambswool packing, biamped with JRDG 302/4 driven direct by high-output DAC.  Pots around 1:30, medium pea-size chunk of putty removed from each "vitrified high compliance" passive radiator.

At the risk of setting myself up for tomorrow's gathering, I would like to go on record saying how INCREDIBLY HAPPY AND GREAT SOUNDING MY RM 40'S ARE!!

Horseheard (aka the master PR tuner) was over and together we spent a few hours tweaking the system (mostly playing with the PR).  Besides tweaking, we did bi-amp the 40's with a second set of 201's.

Before anybody goes there...the system was already sounding very, very, good with a single set of 201's.  The second set just took it ...
Well , after Saturdays NY Rave meeting at George's , I'd have to fully agree with George ...the 40's sounded excellent. Nice soundstage, depth, power, ect. He's got an excellent lineup of equipement, tweaked to the max. Very impressed !!  Check NY Rave circle in a day or two....sure you will find other meeting comments posted there.... 8)

As far as being a happy RM40 owner, that I am!  I have had them longer than any other piece of audiophile gear, that should say something in and of itself.   I had upgrades (FST, caps, etc) planned for the future, just as soon as short term priorities on the house get complete.

I have to say that I also really love the adjustability of the RM40's.  I have had mine in 4 different homes, each needed quite a bit different tweaking to get the sound right but I have been happy with the sound in all but my most recent house, but that is because I haven't had time to tweak them yet.  In every room, stock settings, or where I had them tuned previously was far from optimal and only retuning allowed them to dial in where they sounded truely balanced.

My room now eithers has overkill in the midrange, tons of echo and no imaging with the RM40's in one logical position of lots of imaging with faint midrange, even midrange suck out (probably in a mid null) and rattle your heart bass punch in another.   It is going to take room arranging, positioning and retuning to get things right.   Don't discount these components when evaluating speakers!
