Modded Squeezebox 2 rev 1.1 and beyond

After reading some of Slimdevices CEO Sean Adams tests on jitter in the SB2 here , I have decided that all future mods will have the second oscillator removed. All previous units modded can be sent back to have this rev done at no charge.

I will be trying out a pulse transformer on the digital output soon. If that makes an appreciable differnce, I will add it as an option to the mods.

I will also be trying out some additional power supply mods. I will be building an upgraded outboard unit that will have three regulated supplies. It will have the main 5 volt input that would run the computer end of the SB2. There would then be a separate 5 v and a 3.3 v supply that would just go to the DAC chip. Internally, the SB2 DAC would be completely isolated from all the switching power supplies.

This may be offered as an upgraded package. Anyone who ordered the "basic" power supply and/or mod can have it upgraded to the "deluxe" version. The SB2 would have to be modded to use the new power supply.

As a final option to the new unit, the DAC supplies can be run off a 6 volt SLA battery for complete and total isolation from the computer supply. This will require a separate charger for the battery, so two things will have to be plugged into the wall. There will be one switch to change between the battery driving the DAC and AC. The switch will also allow the battery to be recharged.

Having the battery just powering the DAC chip will not draw very much current. I expect quite a long life  for each charge.

This is not going back on my thoughts in another post about battery power. I still feel that a straight output from a SLA battery does not sound as good as when a cap bank is used. Having a battery power regulator circuits with big caps on the output should work out fine. I am not sure yet as to any audible difference between a pure AC powered version and the partial battery version. I will build one and listen and report. If all goes well I will have this ready for the listening session during RMAF.

The current state of the art for Bolder Cable mods includes:

Removal of internal 5 volt regulator from switching supply. Disconnect switching supply inputs to DAC.
Run 5 volt and 3.3 volt supply to DAC from linear supply. Removal of headphone amp IC. Disconnect audio op-amp from power.
Replace and upgrade the 5 volt main input cap. Replace and upgrade the 5 volt and 3.3 volt DAC power supply caps. Reroute the digital signal path.
Replace the analog output connectors with Cardas RCAs. Replace the digital output connectors with WBT NextGen of Canare 75 ohm BNC. Use Sonicap coupling caps direct from DAC to ouyput jacks.

Replace the stock switching power supply with a linear 5 volt regulated 1.5 amp DC powaer supply.

This is what I am offer when ordered from the website right now. All previous mods have now been converted to this level.

I will be busy this week trying out separate outboard regulators for the DAC. I am not sure at this time if they will improve the sound any more. It will cost about $300.00 more to go this route. It will require a different case for the power supply that is fairly expensive.

I will keep posting here with my findings.

Right now the SB2 mods sound fantastic. I believe that a current modded SB2 run direct into a power amps will equal, if not exceed the sound of most stand alone CD player or external DACs.

This is the bleeding edge of sound reproduction, folks. It may get a little bit better, but it certainly will cost a LOT more that what is being offered today.

Here is a quick comment about the modded SB2 rev 1.25

prpixel from AudioAsylum:

"I recently had my SB2 modded by Bolder Cable. The modded SB2 is light years better than the stock unit; more bass, better soundstage and an oh so smooth midrange."

I just want to acknowledge that the mods have not been completed in a vacuum. I get inspiration and ideas from many places.

The Slim Devices forum has been a great help as has the posts from Sean Adams.

The Lab Circle here has pointed me in directions I wouldn't have come across so quickly on my own. Occam and Josh K have had some good ideas that I used as a starting point in some of the recent upgrades.

Mike Galusha is always a great sounding board and beta tester.

Thanks to all.
