Speaker Stand Subwoofers
« on: 21 Oct 2012, 05:08 pm »
I am thinking on building a pair of subwoofer speaker stands.
Was looking at the GR servo subs. I may do two per stand side firing OB.
I want to keep the column to 6"x10" if possible.
Any one build something like this? Could a small H or U frame OB work?

If you are thinking on building them OB, wouldn't side firing put you listening in the nulls?  I thought I remembered Danny saying you need to have those drivers firing front-on when running OB?

Yeah, I had that concern. Maybe I could figure out a front firing configuration.

But then the rear firing woofer would probably be too close to the front wall.

Frankly hard to ignore the Epik subs for the price if you can live with a lower stand.  And the nice thing about them was the opposing in phase drivers that eliminate vibration.  I was/am contemplating them turned on end with added feet (plate amp/connectors would be on the bottom, feet would be long enough to clear wires/cooling vanes and provided needed height).

Like mentioned before a side firing OB would put you in the null of the speaker.

In any case any cabinet that is say 6" x 10" x 24" will have an NET internal volume of less than 1 cu ft (28 litres). I would hence consider an isobaric sub using 4 small 5" woofers like the links below driven using a 300-500w plate amplifier.

If side mounted is what you want maybe a 8" with a matching PR like this one

hope this helps.
