Hey XLR,

Thanks for the pics - nice!  Can you give us some detail on your system components?  I took a look at the review link - do the speakers you are looking at have the newer cabinet style?

thanks for responding westcoast

here's a list of my system components:
Amplifier: Audio Note (UK) Conqueror ST-300B SE Triode Front end:
Table: Clearaudio Solution,
                 Tonearm+cart1: VPI JMW-10 + CA ABeta
                 Tonearm+cart2: Rega rb-250 + denon DL-103
Phono stage: vintage Dynaco pas-3 using
                      line-out+NOS US Navy sonar step-up
Preamp: Audio Note UK Line Preamp (12au7)
InterCs: DIY non-insulated silver (sibilant!)
Speaker Cables: Audionote AN-SPx
Speakers: Silverline Audio Sonatina I
Digital Front: Rotel RCD-991 AE

the AN-J speakers being offered to me probably still uses the old cabinet material. i was told its level 2 so its probably an AN-J/SPe. they're probably not going to be as pretty as the sonatinas so my wife will not be so happy...but hey this is my listening system, right?  :D

Hi XLR_silver :)

I've only heard a couple of AudioNote speakers.  One of their lower priced models (not sure which model) and one of the silver voiced coil little devils ;).

I thought both speakers sounded good...but the lower priced model were a MUCH better value.  If you can pick them up from a local dealer...They're worth a drive to audition them.  After an audition...you can then see if they're worth your money...or not.

If you like to get some more information about certain audionote speakers...you can try a *ping* at audioasylum for Peter Qvortrup.  He seems to make himself available for any question regarding audionote products.  You can also try the very enthusiastic RGA at audioreview.  He certainly gets an A+ for enthusiasm...but if you can wade thru his posts.  He seems to have alot of experience listening/owning/researching various models of audionote speakers.

I actually think the Sonatinas are similar sounding speakers, to the AudioNote speakers that I've heard.  When you get good speaker/room placement...they can sound quite good!  What more (or less) are you looking to get from the audionote speakers that your sonatinas aren't getting you.

Have you tried any other amps with your speakers?

I'd be interested to hear what you end up with...let us know :D

    take care....and have fun!

I still use a pair of the less expensive Audio Note AZ-TWO speakers for evaluatiing and testing amp mods. I have run several dozen amps through these speakers including Audio Note's own P-ZERO monos (complete AN system).
In all honesty, I truly enjoy these speakers and find their presentation very good with amps ranging from 3.2 watts (modified ASL Orchid 2A3) to 70 watts (Reference Jolida 801).
Nothing has been done to these speakers other than a capacitor upgrade which even that was nothing exotic (yet). Soon I will be going through them again using a much higher quality capacitor and wiring everything in silver wire.
The speakers are shown in the PIC below. They are the black floor standing units in fron of the big Ushers.
I think you are making a good choice considering the AN speakers. Let us know what you decide.

PS: I am not carrying Audio Note at this time due to local area economical reasons. Just wanted to mention this as my post may have come across as promotional. I do still enjoy these products.

XLR,

I've heard a couple of Audionote Speakers (probably the same ones as Gonefishin). The cheap one was a good sounding speaker and I think it was under $500. The Expensive one was in an all AudioNote system at >$60,000 (If I remember correctly) total and I think it sounded very average.

I've heard the "Avalon Style" Silverlines at a friends house, and personally, there is no way I would trade the Silverlines for the much more expensive AudioNotes.

My ears, my preferences, my $.02 worth........

Enjoy,

TIC

thanks for the nice compliments! btw, your edgarhorns are to die for.

anyway, to answer your question: i feel like i could a thicker midrange from standmounts like the AN-J or AN-E models than from my sonatinas.
i found this topic very interesting in rochlin's review of the AN speakers

yes, i think my sonatinas are better matched with push-pull tube amps than with triode amps. although there's really very little to complain about  with the way they work together now.

thanks! :D :)
