Reading many of the audiophile mags, including Stereophile, is like reading the comics in the newspaper. It's all funny and entertaining, but not to be taken seriously. You might get more useful information from forums like this one. That might point you into a direction and give you information to pursue. People who own these "overly expensive box of wires" are willing to share their thoughts... without the pay off.

Even so, one needs to listen and try out a product before you convince yourself it's great?!??

I use the "big magazines" for nothing more than their measurements, but I do put more faith in Kal Rubinson than any other reviewer from Stereophile.  He seems to be more truthful than the others, and you generally don't need a decoder ring to decipher his true feelings.  YMMV.
