HELP ! Mystery Ortofon Cartridge Identication
« on: 28 Sep 2012, 08:19 pm »
I got two cartridges with a recent vintage Pioneer turntable.  One from the lettering on top is an Ortofon, but no model # & the stylus is missing.  Picture below.

(*) Gold star to whoever can identify it
(**) Gold stars if you can also tell me whether it's worth getting a replacement stylus for it
(***) Gold stars if in addition you can tell me where to get a repalcement stylus (assuming it's worth it)

Bonus point: the other cartridge is a Realistic R47 EDT (with a Shure RS 5T stylus), which seems to be very similar to the Shure M75ED-Type II.  Is this cartridge worth mounting?  This seems to be a rung below the V15, which is the only Shure cartridge I ever owned.

Thanks!

Like this?

It's a moving iron, but there were around 20 different models with the same body.  Many of these overlapped with only the stylus type being different.  It's probably an M-15 or 20?  Hard to tell.  This one (M20 Super) is quite good - back of the hall with nice top end and well defined full bass.  Load it at 50 - 52K and it brings the midrange closer.  The M-20 E Super is identical except for an elliptical stylus.  They're here:

For a stylus, I suggest getting in touch with William Thaaker in Germany.  He might know which stylus would fit.  He also might have the orig stylus.
He has a shop and sells on US ebay.  A quick search will find his web page.  There's another in Germany, Axel, he custom makes styli and also might have the orig.  He has a good reputation.

There were a few V-15 carts, so it's hard to know what your expectations are.  The M75 EDII is a listenable cart, maybe not the nth degree of resolution, but musical.  I'm not familiar with all the Ortofon MI.  The one I have, I really like. I think it would be worth pursuing.  For the price of a stylus it's hard to go wrong.

Just getting back to AC after a week long absence.  Thanks neo for the info - think you get all the stars + bonus.  The cartridge you showed looks identical to the one I have.  The 20 series styli seem a bit pricey, so may try a 15 series.  Kinda taking a shot in the dark here also.

The Shure V15 I had I believe was the V15VXMR (this would have been late 80's / early 90's).  Anyway - can't hurt to mount the RS / Shure cartridge one of these days.
