Different SME series iii, different protractor?
« on: 27 Sep 2012, 06:30 pm »
Hi Gents,

Been a long long time since I had a TT setup.

I have a 3009 series iii arm, but don't know if it is an earlier or later version. The headshell of mine has more holes vs another iii and headshell I recently saw. Will this identify the earlier vs later version?

Also, I see that the earlier uses 60 mm vs the later which uses 66 mm and 121 mm setting protractor.

Enjoy the Music has one that is 70 mm and 127 mm. Is the mm very critical? I am mounting a cartridge on an STD turntable, sme series iii arm.

Cheers and thanks.

There were 4 series III arms.  2 had an eff length of 229mm and two were 232.2.  The longer arms were designed for Baerwald, the shorter, Stevenson.  I suggest seeing if you can achieve Baerwald.  Maybe with the mount, you could get it even if it was a Stevenson type?  You just have to give it a try.  Also, it seems (to me) that MM/MI type carts usually do better with those arms.  They sound very good with higher compliance carts.
