Greg's mini-monitors in Hawaiian koa
« on: 23 Sep 2012, 02:49 am »
Greg wanted small monitor speakers.  Since he had a subwoofer, bass extension was not an issue.  Size was.

A while ago we developed some small monitors to use with our computers in the shop.
I thought this speaker might be ideal for this application.

You won't find this speaker on our web site because, frankly, we couldn't figure out any way to make a profit on it.
But we have built a few pairs for people whose applications required a very small monitor.

In Greg's case, he also wanted matching stands.

Here are some pictures...

And a close-up...

Happy listening Greg!

Pretty Jim.  Not sure I recognize the drivers?

Hopefully you made a small killing on them stands Jim.

They are cute little suckers though, Greg should love them.  :thumb:

Those are beauties Jim.  Can you share the rough dimensions of the speakers (just for fun of course, as we don't want to promote orders on this one!).

Even thought the margin isn't there do you mind sharing what the cost is for something like this?

Ouch

When I was kid in NY I was a Giants fan.  I remember the white sweatshirt with blue and orange logo.  Then Tarkenton went to the Vikes and I never looked back.

You should've stopped at Green Bay  :P

Nice looking speakers and stands, Jim.

These speakers are 6" wide, 10" tall and 8.5" deep.  We charged $699 for them (not including the koa veneer).

Here's the story behind them:  We needed some small monitors for computers around the shop.  The 4" TangBand driver is a full-range driver with a titanium cone.  It is a nice little driver.  When we finished the first pair, Dennis Murphy suggested adding a tweeter for better off-axis response.  So we did.  Obviously, speakers like this don't play very deep.  But at some point, we may do a small 8" or 10" sub to go with them.  Four of these, coupled with a small horizontal center channel utilizing the same drivers and a small sub, they would make a nice little 5.1 channel setup.  But that's for another day...

Greg - those look really nice; great choice in veneer.  I saw a couple pairs of that design in Jim's shop and thought they would make one heck of a PC speaker system (overkill actually).  Congrats, Greg, and welcome to the Salk family (again).

How are these tang band drivers in general compare to drivers like seas, scanspeak? they are inexpensive and some look to be quiet well built and designed.

Nuance,

I just received the speakers about 3 hours ago.  As you probably expect, Jim's photos don't do justice to the actual speakers.  I am not new to the Salk family, as I also have a setup with SongTowers, SongSurround I's and a SongCenter.

I asked Jim to recommend speakers for a particular application where I would be only 7 feet from the speakers in a small, well treated room.  Jim recommended the mini-monitors, even though he really doesn't publicize them for the reasons he documented in his earlier post.  As he has never led me down the wrong path before, I agreed wholeheartedly.

The Koa wood veneer is one of my favorite woods.  However, it is pretty exotic and I couldn't justify the cost for the SongTower system, but for the much smaller monitors and stands I figured I could swing it (the total cost of the veneer veneer for the monitors and stands was only $50 less than the veneer for my whole SongTower 5.0 system).  Jim did try to persuade me to go with black stands to save money, but I knew I would regret it, so I stayed with the Koa. I would love to see this veneer on some Soundscapes.

I haven't had a lot of time to listen to the speakers, but my first impression is that, in my room for the application I need, they are fantastic.  I have an SVS SB-12 Plus subwoofer (the older version with an onboard PEQ) handling bass.  Jim recommended a crossover of 100 HZ.  The highs and mids are fabulous and the sub takes over the bass.  I couldn't agree more with Jim that these could be included in a nice HT system with the right sub and center.

Anyway, thanks for the welcome, and if first impressions mean anything, I am going to be very happy with these speakers.
