How to maintain speaker cabinets ?
« on: 9 Sep 2012, 02:21 am »
Hello

My B&W 802's are fading Behind the speaker grills. The grills are on always as I have two curious minds in the house. Humidity is a problem during summer/fall. Appreciate any suggestions to keep the cabinets in good shape.

Thanks

What veneer do you have? On my oak Lorelei's, I use Howard's Restor-A-Finish (Golden Oak) once a year. Spring & Fall, I use Howard's Feed-N-Wax (beeswax) but humidity isn't as much of a problem for me here in Vermont as is dryness from the winter's baseboard heating so you might not have any need for this. The Restor-A-Finish will defintely restore your B&W's depending on if you can match up the veneer with what's available. I used it on my hardwood floors and it did luster restoration wonders. It slightly darkened the oak veneer on my Lorelei's but it was subtle & desirable for me. I use it on my Lorelei's more for protection than actual restoration. You can check out an informative video HERE.  :thumb:

Ultra-violet light causes some woods to darken over time, like Cherry. Maybe your grills are preventing the darkening that is happening on the exposed wood. So remove the speakers from the sun, or apply UV protection film to the windows. I don't know of a polish/wax that screens UV, but might be something out there. "303Protectant" is great for protecting many types of surfaces from UV. http://303products.com/ Don't know if it will work on finished wood.

Answer to topic:  keep your cat(s) and kid(s) away from them.   :x

Yes cherry darkens (a beautiful/most desired patina).  My furniture suffers the same effect where the lamp/etc. always sits.  Taking it out of direct sunlight only helps, it will still darken.

So remove the grills forever (if cherry it will darken to match) or never remove the grills or paint under the grills.

Thanks all for your suggestions. Robin I watched the video on UTube and seems to be the most efficient. Not sure about the waxing part though. My speakers are cherry and the fading/discoloration part looks like walnut. Hopefully the restorex will do it. My speakers are not in direct sunlight so that is one less issue to look outfor. Thanks again everybody and have a good rest of the weekend.

Thanks
