Good questions...my room is quite different than yours so I'm not sure I have anything to offer as far as room treatments. My VR-33s sound great about 9" from the wall, which is the long wall of my modest living room. Plaster walls/coved ceiling, carpet.
But really, I'm just too lazy to conduct endless experiments with the 1001 variables in high end audio.
