internet radio- no workey
« on: 13 Aug 2012, 12:00 pm »
Out of the blue, my old G4 stopped playing internet radio.

Any ideas about trouble shooting?

It's a 733mhz, 512 mb sdram. I use this exclusively to play internet radio in the office.

Thanks,

Doug

Check the Audio Midi settings ( Applications>Utilities>Audio Midi ) to be sure the Output is set to Speakers in both laeft and right panels.

OK. I already checked that but I checked it again and everything seems ok with Audio Midi. Don't know what you mean by "to be sure the Output is set to Speakers in both laeft and right panels." But, audio Midi is seeing the usb converter and it is checked as the output.

The other reason I don't it's the Audio Midi is that the "play" button on Itunes will not play... if that makes sense. I click on it and it "greys up" and then nothing. When it's working correctly the play arrow turns into a = sign or "pause" button.

Perhaps it was not mentioned, did you try rebooting the computer?  Once in a while, I see streaming something BUT there is no sound, a quick reboot gets it going again.

Just to be clear you can play a CD or .mp3 file on the computer through itunes but if you try to listen to a radio station through itunes, nothing?

Do you get sound on Youtube or a browser based radio station?

Let me try to be a bit more specific. It would be helpful if you could describe your system. You mentioned a usb converter. First, I would want to be sure you can connect to the internet. Are you able to verify that? If you're still having a problem you might disconnect any usb drives or optical cable that is connected. Sometimes connecting a device will change the appearance and function of the Audio Midi panel. With nothing connected to your computer the Audio Midi window should have a left and a right pane. To play through your computer's speakers the left pane should have " Built-in Output " selected. There is an icon of a speaker in that selection box. In the right hand pane " internal speakers " should be selected in the drop down menu. Keep us posted.

OK, I'm back. Batteries went dead in my mouse and keyboard and I had no inventory in the house.

I can get on the internet.
I can play internet radio through the Itunes selected list under  "Library"> "Radio"
I cannot play any of the Radio stations that are saved and accessed under Playlist called  "Radio Playlist"

Finding these stations and getting their url in Itunes is a pain in the arse. I don't want to do it again... unless someone can tell me how to do it easily.

Thanks for your help.

What do the URLs look like for the radio stations saved in your playlist ?

Can you paste a few examples?  (File > Get Info, then click 'Edit URL' button on the Summary tab and copy the URL)

For example:
http://zlz-stream14.streamserver.ch/2/rsj/aacp_64
http://wprhqstream4.uwyo.edu:8000/kuwl256.mp3

The url's are on another computer and it would be too much brain damage to try to get them to this computer.

Anyway, here's another clue... I can drag a radio station from the Itunes list (one which plays fine out of the list) into my Playlist called "Radio Playlist" and it won't play. The url's look the same.

Maybe the playlist container is somehow corrupted.  What happens if you create a new playlist and copy the stations into it?

I found this in the Apple Forum if you think it might help:

Restoring "damaged" iTunes library file
Mar 28, 2008 1:50 AM (in response to ideapower)
RELAX -- i was able to restore my iTunes Library to work again without any changes or loss. -- see below for what i did, here's how it happened...

...when my ext HD was accidentally disconnected while running itunes, the app froze. I reconnected the HD and restarted itunes. A dialog box saying something like importing data came up and it stayed for a long period and i could see it was working the HD. i probabably should have let it run until it was done, but i pressed the stop option after 5 minutes because i thought it might be hung up. Seems all the HD jogging meant it was rebuilding the 160 Gb library -- who knew?

anyway, i guess the app was trying to do an automatic restoration process (we need to communicate better, iTunes...) The aborted process created a new library file that had only about a quarter of my music and no playlists, which obviously is not OK at all, so i came to this discussion for some clues...I saw a lot of discussion about reloading everything which seemed kinda wack, and was not an option so i pieced together some bits of best answers.

What worked for me was:

1.Quit iTunes.

2. Copy the largest, most recent library from the "Previous itunes library" folder to desktop. It will have a date appended to its name.

3. New default iTunes library and iTunes Library.xml files are created in the iTunes folder if you restarted iTunes when it couldn't read your preferred library. The itunes library file has an itunes logo on it and the iTunes Library.xml file is a text document. Trash these two new files. Don't bother with other Library files in sub-folders, because just the two top level Library files are read by the app.

4. Drag the library file from the desktop back into the iTunes Music folder. The file should be renamed just "iTunes Library" -- Don't worry about not adding a replacement iTunes Library.xml file - a new one will automatically regenerate if the iTunes Library can be read.

5. Start iTunes and ta-da...Hopefully that'll do it. Do something to celebrate, I was so stoked i signed up for this discussion to share what worked for me... Help a neighbor, or do something nice...

After closer inspection it seems that my url's ARE corrupted.

All of them start with something like this: http://pri.kts.net/redir/index....

They're all bad except for the one that I recopied into the playlist- which is playing fine now.

Before I  try to fix this playlist, I need to explore other ways to manage internet radio. Maybe I need to start a new thread for that.

Really appreciate the help fellas.
