best Driver for upper bass and Midrange
« on: 1 Nov 2012, 09:07 pm »
SO i got some funds in my pocket ...and i want something really good to go with my current open baffle which is eminence alpha 15 from 200hz to low..... Mid-range currently is beta 15 and i m not so happy with it...and my lovable Neo3 which takes from 3kHz and up ...

so i am looking to get a driver from 200-4Khz ....it will be getting powered by an Active crossover with B&K 120w amp

I have Seas and i will be lying if i be saying i don't like what i hear from it , its a nice driver...in meanwhile i have zeroed in to i guess only two drivers

  • Neo 10
  • Seas 1141

any other guys you recommend this will be purely open baffle no box nothing....pic of current speaker for reference only...

Check the GR Research Circle, Danny sells some 6.5" drivers that have been custom made for OB applications. I would go MTM with that nice little neo 3 between them. They cost about $100 ea.

Neo 10, for sure.  Even Danny says they do 200-3K better than anything you can buy.  I would go with two of them to get better power in the lower range.  If you are low on funds, just start with one per side.

Another vote for the Neo10 here.

Ric, what's the latest with your dual Neo10/Neo3 baffles?

The best?  I'd say AudioTech 15H SDKAM, but Per Skaaning doesn't give 'em away.

You've used this driver outside a box down to 200Hz?

I'm not so much in love of the B&G planars, but haven't tried in my own speakers.
Try the JA8008. 6,5" are too small in OB IMO, unless you use a pair. Using a pair of wideband midrange speakers will open the way to more possibilities (Xmax can be lower, etc).

Greg,
Was originally designing the speakers to use with DSP/xover (modified Behringer/tri-amping).  Now realize that most do not want the complications of all those extra parts.....so now focusing on passive xover between mids and highs (also, one small cap in front of amp to limit lows going into the mids).  I am going to chop off the top of the speaker shown on my site and try both a one Neo 10 and one Neo 3 top end and also a two and six line source and a four and 12 line source.  By having separate upper baffles I can move the mid/tweet baffle forward and backwards and see if time aligning with the woofs makes any difference or if the phase control in the servo sub amp can do the same.....we shall see.  Since these are a commercial design I cannot say any more on this forum but when the kits and finished speakers are ready for sale there will be a thread in the Industry Ads section.  Any further questions should be done via email.
