Current Audiophile Caliber External HDs? (ie Oyen or ?)

Looking for recommendations (ideally a consensus) on upgrading my music library external hard drive.  I did a brief search and haven't seen this topic addressed recently.

I currently use a 1TB Oyen Mini Pro external hard drive (by FW) to my Mach2Music mini (SSD internal drive for OS).  I just past the 980GB stage and am at the limit of my 1TB drive.  As part of this upgrade, I want to have the capacity to get to 2TB as I plan to start adding hires files.

Is an Oyen platform in a mini drive still preferred?  This current unit has worked great and is very quiet.

Also - I use the FireWire connection for the HD access and USB from MacMini to DAC.  My preference is to continue to use the FW pathway.

Thanks in advance
Kenreau

Take it apart and just replace the drive with a 2TB Seagate.  The enclosure is fine.  Most of the current enclosures can handle 2TB without problems.  The latest can handle > 2TB.

That Oyen mini pro is the 2.5" drive size.  I only found one 2TB HD in a 2.5" size and it costs $230.  Yikes.

Skimming the Oyen website, I just noticed the larger 3.5" DataTale assemblies.  Those seem to have more capacity options and more reasonable costs.  Is anyone using those?

Thanks

The Oyen FW let's you daisy chain the drives via FW so you could always add another drive case and 1TB drive.  $175 gets you there...

I like Icy Dock enclosures. I'm currently using one of their raid enclosures with dual 1tb drives.

FWIW, 3.5" drives are generally noisier than 2.5" drives. Don't know whether that would be an issue for you or not but might be something to check into, as well as fan noise.

Thanks, that's an idea.  I'm set up though to run firewire without the power leg.  I guess I could just get another adapter and PS for it.  Hhhmmn, I'm going to keep noodling this around.

Thanks

Take a look at this while you noodle...might give you new (or old) ideas!

Thanks, Inferno!  I'm just a little leery doing the daisey chain thing and adding the boxes and cables and ps, etc.  Trolling through CA, I also noticed someone recommending the Western Digital My Book Studio FireWire 800/400 outboard drive.  2 TB for $160.  For simplicity sake, maybe coughing up the $230 for a 2.5" 2TB to fit in my Oyen minipro is the best for my peace of mind.

I'm going to keep my ear to the ground and see if any other options pop up at RMAF show coverage and then pull the trigger on one of them.

Thx

Double check those DataTales.  A while back they changed the controller from Oxford to something else.  If you go to another drive, make sure it has the Oxford chipset.

NUTS, the WD 2TB 2.5" drives have a case height of 15mm and the Oyen minipro max allowed is 12.5mm.

Good catch, Darrell, the DataTale enclosures are no longer using the Oxford chipset.

Oyen 1TB minipro daisey chain gang, here I go.

Thanks
