Issue with the 4bsst2
« on: 19 Jun 2012, 05:01 pm »
Hi James,
I've been having an issue with the 4b amp lately. On power up the right LED goes red, then green as it should but, the left LED on startup goes red only and then the amp completely shuts down. This happens every time since yesterday.
I was listening to music on low volume all day with no issues at all. Then a few hours later i wanted to hear some more music and this is when it started.
I've checked all connections and everything else in the system powers up except the amplifier. Do you have an idea of what this could be.

Thanks,

Mark

Is your amp the C or pro series?

Just want to thank you James and Mike for the work on the 4B. It works perfectly now and the family is enjoying everything the Bryston/ML logan set up has to offer (in spades mind you!).

PS - i also ordered your BHA1 and look forward to the listening.

Thanks

Mark

Inquiring minds want to know.  What was the problem, and how was it solved?

The problem is described in the first part of the topic, not sure what caused it.

It was solved by replacing 4 power transistors and 1 driver trans on the left channel.

Was the problem with a new unit, or did it start after some period of ownership?

I ask, because I had a similar problem, and never really squared the 100 hour burn-in before shipping with an out of the box problem.  My dealer fixed things, but it did mean taking everything apart and trips to the dealer to drop off and pickup.

The amp was bought as a demo unit that the dealer had for about 2yrs. I was the only person that really ever used when i was at the store according to the dealer.

No abuse done as it never got used while sitting on the display shelves. Bryston is a hard sell at my dealer when compared to most of their other brands mainly due to price, proper demonstrations and availability of their products which i believe is the dealers fault.
