Squeezebox with dial-up
« on: 26 Jul 2012, 06:30 pm »
Hi All
I was wondering if I would be able to take advantage of enough features on a squeezbox with a dial-up connection to make it worth while or if you guys could offer up better solutions

Thanks in advance for all the help
Mike

I'm not sure what features you are talking about beyond Internet radio or firmware updates.

With dialup having a theoretical 56kbps download speed and that real-world throughput may be substantially lower, Internet radio is not a good proposition.  While there are a variety of 32kbps low bitrate radio streams, you may not even be able to sucessfully listen to those without interruptions.

Online firmware updates over dialup are a little iffy, and sometimes there can be dire consequences if the update is interrupted, so I would rather download the firmware updates to a USB thumbdrive and update from that.

Didn't know that you could still get that.

Steve,
Thanks for the reply. Sorry should have been more specific. I would like to be able to use my computer as a server and control it from across the room, as well as use the built in dac and headphone out until I could find a better solution for them. As far as connection speed that is what I thought but wanted an opinion from somebody that knew more than I do about the Squeezebox before I looked elsewhere.

Thanks,
Mike

Operating the Touch with a local server should work fine with a dialup connection or with no internet connection at all. The initial setup may be tricky, though. It will insist on registering itself at mysqueezebox.com. I've never tried it, but I assume that would work fine over dialup. You can also skip this step in the setup by swiping the touchscreen from left to right when it asks you for an email address.

It might also try to update its firmware, which could be a chore at 56k. Except during setup, the way firmware is normally updated is that the server downloads  any new updates and then pushes them to the player. If that happens (your server would need access to the internet) and the firmware downloads go OK (although they'll take a long time), then the Touch will have no problem updating itself when necessary.
