New BP26 owner - hookup questions
« on: 25 Jul 2012, 07:54 pm »
Hi folks,

Recently acquired a pre-owned BP26 in great shape from a fellow AC member to provide company to my 4Bsst2. Unit is in excellent condition. I am still in the process of setting it up correctly!

Here's my electronics, pls advise on optimal hookup?

Source - PS3/SB duet
DAC - EE minimax
HT receiver - Marantz 6005
Speakers - Currently MMGs, waiting on delivery of the 1.7s

Firstly do folks leave it on or turn off the power when not in use?

Secondly, currently my hookup is only setup for the Squeezebox as a source via the DAC into the BP26 all unbalanced. From there it goes via one of the outputs into the Marantz played on Source Direct and eventually into the 4B sst2.

I dont know if there is a way to setup HT bypass on this.

I dont know if my setup can be improvised to minimize noise and maximize the experience.

Please advise.

Regards,
Kaul

P.S. Is there a way to hookup a sub directly to the preamp in case I decide to move this setup to my music only 2.1 ch rig (No HT/receiver).

srb

There is no HT Bypass input on the BP26, but if you want to listen to your Squeezebox source in 2 channel stereo (and not matrixed 5.1 through the Marantz AVR) then you would have less noise and better fidelity by eliminating the AVR from the 2 channel stereo signal path.

Sending the BP26 output into the AVR and then the AVR pre-out into the 4BSST as you apparently have it setup now doesn't justify adding the BP26 at all if the signal is still going through the AVR, but it does of course give you the option of a subwoofer for all sources.

Squeezebox > DAC would go into one of the BP26 unbalanced line inputs then you can connect the BP26 balanced outputs to the 4BSST balanced inputs.

Then your PS3, Blu-ray or other multi-channel sources would connect to inputs on the Marantz AVR and the L/R pre-outs of the AVR would connect to another line input on the BP26.  This would require the BP26 volume control to be returned to the predetermined level that you used when you set up the speaker levels on the Marantz AVR, when listening to multi-channel sources.

If you move the BP26 to a 2.1 channel system, then you can use one of the unbalanced output pairs to connect to the input pair on the subwoofer that uses the subwoofer's internal crossover.  In this scenario, your speakers would be running full-range.  There are subwoofers that do have high-pass outputs that can be connected to your power amplifier inputs, but again it's possible you could add a small amount of noise or distortion from the subwoofer high-pass circuitry and additional cables, when the goal was to have as pure and short of a signal path as possible.

Do you mean a MPS-2 Power Supply?

I don't own a BP 26 powered by a MPS-2, but a BP 25.
I can only tell what I do with mine, which is a BP PSR Rev 3.2: sometimes I leave it On, and sometimes Off.
During summer, which is rather hot where I live, I switch it Off.
Most of the time, I tend to switch it Off but turn it On 10 to 20 minutes before I turn my amp On.
Sometimes, I Mute it before turning the amp On.

Never noticed a substantial difference.
But the MPS-2 Power Supply is a much more sophisticated unit.
If I had one, I think I'd prefer to switch it Off when not in use.

Fernando.
