Need Some Connection Advice for AVA Vision dac
« on: 31 May 2012, 12:49 am »
Hello everyone,

I am not sure where to ask this so I thought I would start in the AVA circle as I am trying to use my Vision Dac.  I am looking for a HDMI switcher that will have coax or optical audio output while also allowing HDMI video to the tv, does anyone know if this product exists?

I have a blu ray player and xbox 360 that I would like to connect via HDMI to the switch and then from there send the audio to the Vision dac-amp-speakers and the video to the tv.

Any input would be great, thank you

Nocturne79,
I am not sure why you would need to connect to the TV.  I connect from my DVD player's audio out, into the AVA vision DAC with coax, then I mute the TV.  The audio only goes thru my Magnepans. You need to set your DVD players audio out to PCM thru a menu or you won't get any sound.  Video out should only go to your TV.  I hope this helps.

Thank you nightfall1970 I appreciate the input, and yep I will try that for the blu ray, but for xbox360 it only has hdmi out as far as I know with no coax, optical output and I am looking for some kind of switch for that.  Thank you and have a great day

You need a device called an HDMI stripper.  There are several available.  It will strip the SPDIF digital from a HDMI signal and give you a coax or optical digital output.  It is also useful to strip the digital audio directly from a cable box so that your AVA DAC can use this too.  It eliminates all of the DACs built into the cable box or TV set.

Unfortunately, the digital audio embedded in cable or satellite is pretty compressed so the musical improvements using the stripper are not all that great.  Its far better than normal TV sound though.

Every model of the Xbox 360 has optical out to my knowledge...some older units require that you use the component/composite break-out adapter, and while you could still technically use HDMI for video the adapter blocks the HDMI port. There are some hacks available online that will show you how to remove some casing from the adapter to make it work but I'm not sure it is worth all of the trouble. Newer Xbox units have the optical out on the unit itself so you can avoid the issue.

oh yeah sorry,  what I got was this thing

This works really well, I have used it with my xbox and the audio gets sent out to the dac and the video goes thru the hdmi to the tv.  Love it so far and its compact which I love.

This is interesting!  I have a question about it....  do you think this would work to have HDMI from Dune Media Player as input with HDMI output to my AVR (sound and video together) and simultaneous audio output from coax to route to my DAC for music?

The only HDMI output is "ARC" which stands for "Audio Return Channel" I believe.  Confusing.  Is this ARC output any different than standard HDMI?  That is, does the HDMI do pass through to the ARC output?

Thanks for any clarification you can offer.

Well to be honest I am not sure about any of that, I am really dumb with audio stuff.  What I figured is that I have the xbox hdmi connected to it and then a coax out of the digital coax output(from the switch) to my dac which feeds the amp to the speakers. Then the hdmi from switch is connected to my tv and I have high quality video.  I tested to check if the sound was coming thru the dac by turning off the dac and keeping the tv on; when I did that there was no sound but i still saw video.  The only thing connected for sound to my amp is from the dac also.  They did have a return policy and thats actually why i bought one because I figured if it didn't work like i needed then I would just return it.  I hope this helps a little sorry if it did not as I said I am really dumb with audio stuff.

You may have answered my question.  If I understand you correctly, there is no audio carried by the HDMI output from the switch to your display.  I was hoping that it would allow the HDMI signal to pass through without modification while outputting audio to the coax/toslink outs.

Thanks........Peter
