Speaker cable suggestions - homebrew

Getting very close to finishing my open baffle speakers with the Tang Band and Alpha 15 (I'll have pics soon).  I had my vintage Fisher X202 restored by Craig at NOS Valves - great to work with and great work!
So I have about 30 watts from the Fisher and I need to construct some speaker wire. Currently I'm using just standard zip cord - 16 gauge. I have separate lines to the Tang Band and the Alpha.

I came across a number of lengths of Cat 5 that I thought I would try first.  I've read a number of posts about the Cat 5 from using single to multiple strands.  Everything I've found states using the Cat 5 (24 gauge) solid wire.  After I separated my wire, I found that it is stranded Not solid. Does this make a difference?

Also, someone else mentioned magnet wire from Radio Shack. Any suggestions? Thanks,

John

I don't like magnet wire or cat5 based cables... I've tried a few of each including Speltz's anti-cable, IME it produces poor tonality on many acoustic instruments.

One of my favorites is a star quad of 18g mil spec wire, silver plated copper with teflon insulation. It's very easy to twist the wires into a star quad by hand or with a drill. The wire is available fairly cheaply at surplus stores or on ebay in a wide variety of colors.

I have a low power SET amp (5-6wpc), and am currently using this stuff, it might be a good option for wiring the Tang Band...

I've tried magnet wire twice, with different results. The first time I really liked them. Most recently I used them in OB for the mid/HF drivers and didn't like them at all. You should know that its relatively stiff wire, almost like a coat hanger, so it tends to kink rather than bend properly. It is also difficult to properly remove the enamel coasting; some use a liquid stripper or solution made from an aspirin, others a pocket knife. It can be very tedious to strip enamel from thin magnet wire.

I second the recommendation for Teflon insulated silver plated wire over copper as a home brew wire. Very detailed highs and much easier to work with than magnet wire. Make sure its silver plating over 100% copper, as many of the cheaper wire now uses an aluminum or copper/aluminum center. For low frequency drivers, I have had luck with 8 or 10 ga solid copper ground wire (bare) and then using something like Techflex cotton braid to insulate each of the paired wires. This stuff has very low resistance and the right capacitance to sound great on the low end. I don't recommend it for the high side however. Use the silver/teflon in that situation.

Almost everyone I know who made their own cables using cat 5/6 (and swore by them) has now shied away from using them, perhaps after the low/cost novelty has passed, the appearance, etc.  I haven't personally tried them nor have I had the opportunity to listen to them, so I really cant comment on performance.

I've been using white lightening for the past couple of years. They beat out one contender after another.

Next up is these:  Supra Ply 3.4 Speaker Cable

I used Mil Spec 12 gauge silver plated copper wire from eBay and it was pretty good.
I used a quad twist to biwire my Magnepans. bare ends.
I decided to use that wire temporarily when i set up my new Magnepans, but left it on for two years. I finally fixed up my Kimber 8TC stuff and stuck that on My Magiies.
The Mil Spec silver plated was almost as good.
