AVA's ABX Test Box
« on: 29 Jun 2012, 02:28 am »
I didn't want to go off topic in The Lab, so I thought I'd ask here. The questions relate to this Post.

What (and how) is your typical source connected to the two preamps?

It is noted that the new ABX box "even has a computer connection to allow future programming updates and revisions." It is also noted that AVA does not support USB "because high bit rate USB computer output requires software driver programs, and we simply do not want to get into the software support business."

Given that the new ABX box will allow programming upgrades, is a USB enabled DAC right around the corner?

I'm an AVA guy, and I am asking these questions with genuine sincerity.

You should demo this box in a dedicated room at RMAF. It has the potential to be the most interesting of experiments.  :thumb:

Have fun,

Jerry

You can get one today.  The Ministreamer USB board for up to 96/24 USB input available as special order option direct from AVA.  Check out this thread for more info: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=104676.0

I recall that Thread. If I remember correctly, there was a choice of either no drivers or no support. I took the latest announcement to suggest that there may be future programming (driver) support.  :thumb:

We are now testing the USBstreamer.  This supports 192/24 data and has PC drivers available.  We are some time away from any announcements on this.  Give us a month or two.

We normally use the output of one of our DACs as the source for the ABX box.  It accepts any line level analog source and has a built in Y connector providing two sets of identical audio outputs, well isolated from each other.  Since our preamps all have pure resistive input loads not feedback dependent, source interaction is eliminated. Testing DACs will require a separate small box and digital switch to provide two available identical digital sources for DACS under test.
