Need 6L6 recs
« on: 6 Jun 2012, 10:30 pm »
Hi guys.  I recently bought an old Ampeg 6L6 bass amp and the Sovtek 6L6s it came with are testing positive for grid leakage.  So they need replacing and I'm not too familiar with this tube type.  I've never owned a 6L6 amp myself.  I'd like to keep them really cheap, $30-40 for a matched pair.  I'm leaning toward the Russian 6n3ce tube as I've heard great things about them for cheap.  Any other recommendation?  I can't get the coke-bottle 6L6 as it won't fit into the case.

Thanks!

I have several pairs of the new production Sovtek 6L6WXT+ tubes.  $35/pair from tubedepot.

Put some 5881's in that bad boy.  I believe there some Tung Sol reissues out there that are very good.

Many consider the Fender 4 input Tweed Bassman as the best guitar amp ever.  Jim Marshall cloned it for his fabled JTM 45.  Then there is the Fender Tweed High-Power Twin comes to mind.

Both of the aforementioned Fender amps came equipped with Tung Sol 5881's.

I second the 5881 rec.  Military spec version that is typically in a smaller bottle.  NOS, if you can find them, will be quite expensive, but that's all relative to the depth of your pockets.

YMMV

Thanks for the recs, guys!

I just got an idea for a trade which may get me some pricey NOS 6L6s.  Check out my new thread here:

I'm a big fan of the Russiain coin base Reflektor 6P3S-E - they are the best sounding tube I've found for my Onix/Melody SP3 integrated amp. Plus they are really cheap - I'd suggest giving them a try. I got mine from eBay directly from Russia.

This isn't the same vendor, I have no experience with them - but these are the type of tubes I got.

Valve Art 350B's were also pretty nice, but they are the coke bottle type.
