I am no techie, but considering what the BDP-1 does, how well it does it and how solidly it is put together, I think the price actually is pretty moderate, especially in view of the inflated prices of digital stereo equipment these days. Why on earth, for example, should a DAC cost $5K - $10K, even taking into account cost of engineering talent?

I guess what is silly price to some is not so much to others, to some the price of BDP-1 / BDA-1 may seem excessive.
In some cases there may be justification for higher price tag as the product may have more features or be built using far more expensive components and/or design (think of discrete resistor ladder DACs for example).
Whether that brings an increase in performance and justifies the price is for individuals to decide.
In some cases components with higher price tag do not bring an obvious improvement, sometimes even a worse level of performance can be observed.
What I have found so far in regard to Bryston gear is that there is nothing that outperforms it in the respective price brackets.
