Tower 7BSST2
« on: 2 Jun 2012, 08:03 am »
I know of many folks living in the city with small apartment can only afford a small study room as a study cum listening room - space is a luxury and high premium in the city. With that in mind every component in the audio chain has to be carefully thought out and there are no spare gears or gadgets.

I have started with 4BSST2 as its a power house in a compact and reasonable size. The 4BSST2 still does a fantastic job and I doubt any other amplifier out there can perform as good at this price point. Now I am thinking if I should upgrade...naturally next up is the 14BSST2. However, if I am upgrading I should consider monos instead of stereo. Nothing wrong with stereo (actually dual mono) but why not get two instead of one? :D That left me with 7BSST2 but that would need double the space of 4BSST2.

I thought why not a TOWER 7BSST2?? Built with the same electronics but simply flip the case on its side? I am not suggesting to do just that but one that is designed in tower configuration. I know its not as straight forward as it sounds but it certainly can be done. Besides more power the reason for mono is also to have the amplifiers place closer to the speakers which usually is on the floor so it doesn't make sense to have a rack design mono? I can appreciate the 28B has to be in a rack design as its really too big to be in a tower configuration.

How about these - ditch the tubes as heatsinks and with a nice gauge in front??

It would take a complete redesign of the layout. And thus would be a totally new product in a way.
With the current economic lull, it would never happen.
One way to deal with the space issue would be to just keep the amps behind the speakers.
Most speakers have to be away from the back wall anyway for good sound. Having the amp behind is what i would do.
Another way would be under! But that might get tricky.

A third method is to stack the two amps away from the speakers and have somewhat longer speaker cables. Or stack them where the one amp is now.
I have my 4B-SST2 between the two Magnepan 3.6s, but behind a low leather chair. My chair does not harm the sound, but does manage to fill in the big open space well enough so it looks decent. Without just the amp sitting there.

You are just running into the same problem with the 7s. At least the 14B will be bigger than your BIT.... This is the the problem with the 7s compared to the 14. They are just to dependent on the home environment unless you stack them. The cost of rearranging your house, new cables, including two power cables can make the amp considerable more expensive imo. If you are doing the monos you gotta get short speaker cables to max the benefit too.

So this could be a classic example of diminishing returns (the difference between the 14 and 7s). I only say this because you were into the diminishing returns thing.

I would take a pair of 28's instead any time, any way.
Period.

Getting the forklift into the listening room to get them into position would be the tricky part... :green:

92 pounds each. Are you guys muscle-less?
I can slog around 92 pounds. (maybe not go jogging with one under the arm.. but anyway...)
(120 is too much for my girlie physique.. My plasma is too heavy for me to lift all at once. However for ANY studly guy the Plasma is a piece of cake... )
I can certainly lift my Sony SCD777ES at 55lbs as high as my shoulders and up (tough to do, but i can manage it.

And THAT is why you get the front handles too.

I can handle the amps - it's carrying the damned forklift down the stairs without dinging a wall or tripping over a bloody cat...

I guess the tower idea would be too expensive to develop, but it would be a nice option . :)

Only as a better way (for me) to arrange two amps in relation to the speakers and other components. :thumb:

I would venture that I am one of the smallest men here........5'8
That didn't stop me from the 28's........Maybe it's not the size but how you use it.
