The search for better
« on: 25 Apr 2012, 08:38 am »
I have a decent music collection, and in general I am quite happy with what I have in my CD cabinet. I also own a turntable, but hardly ever use it, because my albums are still buried underneath a pile of boxes with stuff in them that I don't really need but don't want to throw out.

I discovered a long time ago that the mainstream CD manufacturers seem to only care about pushing the recording volume all the way up to 11, no matter what the music is. This is also known as "The Loudness War".

The past few years I find myself looking for "not the standard versions" of CD's. Often first pressings, Japanese versions, the earlier MFSL, DCC etc. sound much better than the "regular" edition. I have replaced about 10% of my collection with the better versions, and feel that I finally get to appreciate the recordings the way they were meant to be heard (unless we're talking Metallica of course, they only want deaf fans).

Have you ever discovered that another version (label, mastering, etc.) of one of your favorite CD's sounds a lot better (or at least very different) than the one you're used to? If so, how many and which replacements do you have in your collection?

I've certainly enjoyed some of the recent King Crimson remasters.
When i first became aware of the Loudness Wars it gradually dawned on me that the favourite
tracks on some albums were those recorded at a lower level amongst a cd of clipping.

Sacriligeously i also prefer some of the recent tribute bands to the old poorly done originals.
Heard some good LedZepAgain last week!

I found this happen only once when I was checking out SACD vs. DVD Audio vs. Ordinary CDs.

To my ear (the only useful measure I have), DVD Audio was almost unlistenable, SACD was a bit muffled. Have stuck to CDs since, with the exception of ripping most of what I own to use the BDP-1, which sounds best of all "to my ear".

Led Zeppelin The Definitive Collection
RUSH Sector Box sets
KISS remaster series
BLACK SABBATH 2009 Sanctuary remasters
STEELY DAN remasters

These all sound better than the CDs I bought back in the mid 1980s.

If you like the music any of the reissues from Acoustic Sounds or  Classic Records are a vast improvement over standard issues.

I actually find that the remasters released in the past decade and a bit usually sound worse compared to the first releases. They often are brickwalled and only "sound" better because everything sounds louder. Take a look at the WAV patterns with a wave editor, all dynamics have vanished. It's just one big solid block of sound...

If I want to listen to something LOUD, I own a Bryston and have no issue with turning the volume knob clockwise.
