I have a semi-working Nak 1000 II up for grabs, and my tapes from the 80's still sound great.  Prerecorded tapes couldn't hold a candle to what a Nak would produce.

And who fast-forwards?     Just keep playing it and the music will come around again.   :thumb:

Still have this......(stock photo, not mine)

though it is in need of service. Last time I used it the tone generator for one channel wasn't working. Then last time I tried to check it out the door wouldn't open. Discrete 3 head Nak 581, pretty much the best deck I owned of probably 5.

Then also have this.........

still works like a champ. Harmon Kardon TD392, 3 head Ultralinear. Actually used it to fill time during an audition when a disc became stuck on the pick-up of my Denon CD changer. Tapes still sound remarkably good, and still have many which like Buddy I'd like to transcribe to digital at some point.

Regardless of your format, enjoy the music.  8)

I HATED tapes. They wear out quickly (don't pretend they don't), they hiss, you gotta FF and rewind, which takes AGES, they don't sound good. Lose/lose. The cassettes themselves, the tape can come flying out, it stretches, and it also gets unexplicably bound up in wierd ways. just a godawful medium.

- that rant aside, the old tapedecks look neat. How do any of you have tapes that still play?

Hey!

Like toocool4 said you haven't heard a good tape deck with good tape. They can sound pretty good :D

Yes, they do wear out and get eaten by the tape deck... well the last one happen if you don't keep your deck tape path clean.

Anyway, I grew up with cassette tapes and I'm lucky that I still have some of those old tape from my childhood with me. Some of them are about 30 years old now and yes they still play very well but I rarely play them....  I will have to find time to digitize them. But it sure bring back a lot of memories for me every time I play them.

....

It's on a shelf gathering dust now but occasionally I do pull out some of my vast hoard of cassettes (all Maxell XLII or XLII-S) for my commute to work on an old Walkman (remember those).

...

Yes, the Walkman I remembered those for sure  Have gone through a few myself. :D

That 1000 is a  beautiful deck.  But parts are getting really rare, as well as the expertise to fix one.
Have fun with it, but it may not be able to be brought back to life if it fails.

Dragon, ZX-7 or ZX-9 is a much better bet.

Yes, that is one of my concern about the 1000. I even thought about picking up another as a spare. But than again I just don't have room and my goal was to use this to digitize my tape than just keep the Nak around, but won't be using it much after that.

Hmmm.... I do wonder how much will it cost to get the 1000 tuned up. I know shipping it will be a pain

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

The last time I talked to Willy Hermann, he wasn't interested in working on the 700 or 1000.  That's not a good sign.

If you want a more current Nak. (dragon, ZX or CR) plan on about $400 - $600 to have it fully refurbed.
Heads aligned, cleaned, new belts, calibrated, etc etc.

How many tapes do you need digitized? I've got a couple of decks, might be able to help if it isn't a
large number...

Walkman, never forgot them I still use them everyday on my commute to work. Here is one of my many that I use everyday. This one is the WM-DC2 along with Ray Samuels P-51 Mustang amp.  8)

....the Sony Pro Walkman, in the form shown above, and the WM-D6C, which was a full function deck ( it had record and playback functions unlike the model above which I believe was only playback ) were were the only decks that I really lusted after...apart of course from the Tandberg TD 3014 which I was lucky enough to snag...

...it had awesome performance...it fact it beat several standard more expensive decks in direct comparisons....would still love to have one ( even as a paper weight )....

Cheers

I have 2 x WM-D6C, 5 x WM-DC2, Many WM-DD33 and 1 WM-DD9. All in good working order the reason I have so many is because it is difficult to find parts, this way I have parts to fix broken ones.

The Tandberg 3014 you talk about, I have heard good things said about it but I have not heard one myself so can’t comment.

Here is one on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150802738240?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

...oh, you lucky man you!....

...if there is one that is totally pooched I would love to have it around here... as just a keepsake....err...paper weight....or more appropriately as a wee monument to a great technical achievement ( which in my ever so humble opinion  :) is tied for first with a bunch of other equally wonderful stuff....)

Did you mean one if the WM-DD33 ? if so not promising anything, I may be able to sort you out with a broken one.

...that would be most wonderful if it happens...though I do fully understand the reasons why you would be reluctant to part with one...so no pressure...enjoy your decks as long as you possibly can...they are treasures...

Hey!

Thanks for the offer. I think I have about 10-15 tapes that I definitely want to digitize. But I think I can manage this with my 1000... If I can find time to do it. Wouldn't it be nice if you can do this at 52X like CD

But the good side I think it would be one long listening session while I'm doing that.

Take care,

This is true. I looked into service from a couple of other cassette experts: same result. Parts too hard to find, no go on refurbishing.

Hey!

That's suck.  Look like it won't be long until I have one heavy door stopper... Well the 1000 is too big or practical to be a paperweight  :icon_lol:
