Not my original topic.  See later post on A/B'ing 30 vs. 40.

The above is a picture of the RM 30s from an Audiogon ad.  I have no relationship with the seller - I just liked the picture.  I hope the person responsible for the ad does not mind

Probably should chop down some of those trees to reduce reflected sound, don't you think?

Strangely enough, not too many people have ventured into the "outside listening thing" for obvious reasons.

But I used to set up a really simple system out on my lawn/patio with a pair of DQ10 Dahlquist speakers and Citation electronics, and work all afternoon in the sun while listening to a "roomless" system.

The sonics were remarkable (no reflections)   The clarity and pureness were a "sound to behold".  I did have to sit rather nearfield, but I do that anyhow.

I did keep the electronics and turntable inside the house and ran the speaker cable outside.

Symphonic works were like going to the Hollywood Bowl (which I would years later)

Man, those were the days. 8)

The house I bought has a hot tub outside sliding glass doors.  I have my 57 inch RPTV so that you could sit in the hot tub and watch it.  My girlfriend has asked me if we could run speakers outside so that we could watch shows while in the hot tub!  I think this is a good idea (although I wonder how long I can take in a hot tub), but I think I'll put water resistant, crappy speakers outside way before I attempt to cart my main speakers out there.

Oops!  I didn't mean to hijack the thread.  Now that I have hijacked it, I think the RM30s look better with grills on in that finish.  I bet that is a very good sounding speaker.

W/ all that black on those things (drivers, base, side grill), I would have to get piano black. . .OR, if they offer this option in the future, an MLS cabinet w/ African Ebony. . .mmmmmMMMMMM. . ..

The ad from 'gon with that outdoor picture lists the RM30's as having dual
6" COAXIAL drivers - is that correct?

I wanted to get a nice finish like that (they offer a nice paint finish better than the piano black, for instance), but after all upgrades, I ran out of cash!

As for the RM30s, they have dual 6.5-inch drivers (the ones you see on the front) and dual 6.5-inch passive radiators.  See:

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=6546&highlight=rm30

According to this, the passive radiators fire downward.  So, how does that work?  Is there a small space between the passive radiators and the base?

I didn't really think they were coaxial drivers - but I would have some concern buying from a dealer who thought they were..... :o

As with other VMPS speakers, I think there is a 'slot' at the bottom of the speaker for the passives to fire into, exiting the front of the speaker.

There's no "port sound" from the slot?  (My Linn 5140s have rear-firing woofers ported out the front and every so often, if they're really cranked, you can hear wind passing through the port.)

The slot is almost the full width of the speaker.
I never heard any port sound with my RM2's and haven't with my smaller sub.

You can see the slot at the bottom of the speaker in front, in the picture above.

The passive drivers DO make sounds that you can hear through the slot, but it is MUSIC.

You will not hear the "chuffing" sound of air moving like you can with a port.

The sound can be tailored to your taste with the mortite like it is in some other VMPS speakers.  The mortite was only on the passive closest to the opening.

My bass was a bit muddled when I got the RM30, and after a bit of break in, I removed a "bugger" size piece of mortite, about half the size of a pea, and that tightened the bass right up.

I've been trying for months to come up with a good explanation of slot-loaded passive radiator theory. The closest I've come can be found in the thread about using two active drivers with one passive radiator and why that works.
