Headless mini and display resolution
« on: 10 Apr 2012, 11:48 am »
I'm trying out the "headless" option with screen sharing. After reboot, the available display resolutions come up as 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1680x1050. What I'm really after is something that will make the remote display size fit my laptop display. I looked at SwitchResX but its FAQ says

How can I configure a headless MacMini controlled via Remote Desktop to match the remote resolution ?
Unfortunately, when no monitor is attached, MacOS X uses a hardcoded list of available resolutions, and you cannot change this resolution by the mechanism that SwitchResX uses. Thus you cannot modify this to match the Remote Controller's native resolution.

It proceeds to offer a workaround using a piece of hardware to "fool" the Mac into thinking there is a display attached, but I thought I would ask first... has anyone found a way around this? Or is everyone just using the Remote app on their iGadget?

I can hit 1368x768 which is usable for most minor things, but I sometimes will plug it into a monitor to get the larger resolution.

I've been meaning to try Apple's Remote Desktop app but it hasn't been updated yet for Lion, there's a few more tricks than a standard VNC client as well.

You could also consider using a VNC client over Apple's.    At least on Windows you can resize the remote desktop to fit the client but that won't change the screen resolution.

Hi, I think the issue is setting the resolution on the headless machine, the client doesn't have a choice on this (AFAIC).
