12' wide is about what I have the 1.7s in and tweeter in is just fine.
I'm using a small NHT "sub" which is more like the DMW than a real subwoofer.
It won't rattle the floor but my turntable prefers things that way.

Hi Josh:

Thanks for your insight and valuable comments.  I have a 16x15 room and would have no problem with 3.7's.  I had 1.6's (which are basically the same size as the 1.7's), in the same room and felt that I could go a little larger.

Enter the 2.5's which are a good fit for the room. The 3.7's are just a tad bit taller and wider and feel that they would be fine as well.

The OP's room is only 4 feet narrower, which actually makes for a better room acoustically and in my mind could easily handle a pair of 1.7's.

Yeah, thanks Josh, interesting. I know the larger Mags sound better in a larger room, but we deal with what we got. I run tweets out with the MMGs now, sounds best with the series x-over I use.

I'm about to put Tympanis in a 13 x 14 room, so (a) nobody in the world is crazier than me and (b) if they'll work, anything will!

(Actually, the Tympani IVa's turned out to be a more practical choice than the other large Maggies, because they can be used in split configuration, with the double woofer panels against the wall and behind the mid/tweeter panel, which is only 18" wide -- not much wider than my MMG's.)

Thanks you I'm thinking about Tympanis as maybe my bass section.. are Tympanis entirely planar or.. is there a driver section? I'm confused as to what those are exactly... and why Magnepan doesn't still offer this "planar sub".
