Modern Sound?  James Ehnes or Hillary Hahn.

One of my personal favorites is the Heifetz recording with the Boston Symph 1959.
In my opinion, the intensity of his tone has no equals.
Hillary Hahn does sometimes reminds me of his playing, also great recording I agree!

Cheers,
Bob

Are there any high-rez recordings of this composition that would be worth checking out?

Along with my family, I had the opportunity over the weekend to hear this piece performed by a community symphony orchestra and a wonderfully talented high school senior.  It was an unusual room that held an audience of only 100-150.  This made for a very intimate and highly enjoyable concert experience.

The concert had a great "Pops" program:  Fanfare for the Common Man, Sorcerers Apprentice..ect.  I decided to try something different and downloaded recordings of all the program pieces, so my family and I could get familiar with the music prior to the concert.  At least for me, this definitely added to the enjoyment!

Agreed. In my house Heifetz is god. If I utter anything else, I'm in for big trouble.  :)

Cho-Liang Lin with Michael Tilson Thomas and the Philharmonia Orchestra.  CBS Masterworks MK 39007.

I've had my eye on a Hi-Q records reissue of the Yehudi Menuhin direct to disc audiophile pressing done at Abbey Rd. studios.  Anybody heard it and care to comment?

I had the pleasure of witnessing a performane of the Mendelssohn recently featuring the young Russia born violinist Phillipe Quint.  He has a CD of the work releasing March 15th.  The performance was a visual as well as audio delight.  It took my breath away with full body goose bumps.  Google him and check out his website.
