FAT 32 vs NTFS for 240GB SSD?
« on: 11 Mar 2012, 07:31 am »
I have a new Intel SSD 520 240GB drive in an external enclosure I am preparing for use with the BDP-1.

I just read Johnny2Bad’s 9 Oct 2011, 12:35 PM discussion about FAT 32 vs. NTFS formatting.  SSD’s seem to be different sorts of creatures than mechanical drives in terms of how data is stored, retrieved and overwritten.

Would he or others have different suggestions for choosing one format over the other for this 240GB SSD?  Sound quality and drive durability are paramount – portability is not a concern.
Thank You

If you use a Mac, you only option would be fat32 (aka MS DOS(FAT)).  For Windows 7, it's a little harder to format a drive with fat32 these days, it will offer you ExFAT which isn't something the BDP is reported to support, so your best option is probably NTFS.

There won't be an audible difference between the file system, a difference would most likely mean the drive is about to have a failure.  The music files are data at this point and have to be copied to local memory and unpacked before shipping the data to the sound card where the PCM stream can be impacted by various things us Audiophiles like to fret over.

What enclosure are you going to use?   The power supply will have more influence than the drive type, brand or filesystem.

I am using the Oyen MiniPro™ FireWire 800, USB 3.0 enclosure with their included power supply and USB 3 to USB 2 cable. I plug everything into a Furman IT Reference 20i power conditioner.

When I start the BDP-1 with another Oyen MiniPro™ FireWire 800, USB 3.0 with an OCZ SSD it works when AC powered but may not be recognized (Error 09) if only powered by a rear BDP-1 USB port.

I convert all my files to WAV and store them as such.  In my previous post I said portability was not a concern – but I am between computers and do not know if I will stay with PC or consider the next Macmini release.

The Intel 520 series SSDs consume 600mW at idle so an adapter is required to use with the BDP, but the enclosure can be bussed powered which is useful on a computer which will most likely be able to drive several watts.   As for the quality of the wall wart, others will have to chime in.

It's kinda sad to have one of the best rated SATA3 SSDs connected to the BDP using just USB2.0..   Those make killer boot drives on any computer, and if you are just a little bit mental, you would use two for RAID0.

Thank you for the comments.  It is very possible that the Intel 520 SSD could ultimately find a place in a new computer instead of music storage for the BDP-1.  Would one of the Intel 320 series be a good choice for music storage?  They have been around for a while and seem to be reliable. Other SSD suggestions welcome.
