Yamaha DVD-S2300MKII Universal Player
« on: 11 May 2004, 02:40 am »
By all accounts of reviews I've read about this player leads me to believe that this universal player has more potential than similar players at its price point. Absolute Sound/Perfect Vision awarded it player of the year over its competition (Phillips 963SA, Denon DVD-2900, Pioneer DVD-47Ai and others). What is surprising to me is that no one currently that I know of is offering modifications for this player. No one yet anyway. I spoke with Steve from Empirical Audio today. It seems he has his eye on this player as well. The Yamaha offers a better transport with a dual transformer power supply. The DACs are Analog Devices 1955ARS and the DSD is a Sony CXD-2753R. I will seek out this player and send it off to Steve. I have a feeling this player is the sleeper and after modification will be the player to beat.

I look forward to reading your impressions once you get it back. What are you going to have done? Any tubes in this player's future?

I had a 2300 MKI and sent it to be modded. The person doing the work (a well known person) had all kinds of problems and eventually bailed on the project. He seemed to indicate one of the major problems, is that the Redbook, DVD-A and SACD are all handled by separate circuitry which becomes a problem in modding. The MKI stock had decent sound but left me wanting more, hence the mod attempt. If someone was able to mod this unit it may be quite interesting. Please keep us advised if you go through with it. I am still looking for the right universal player.

I think that having seperate circuitry and power supplies for Redbook, DVD-Audio, and SACD would make for a better design for modification than integrated circuits and power supplies. It would probably make for a more extensive mod., however, I think the end result would be better. The key is to find a modder with the skills to pull it off. I am confindent that Steve is one of the few that can do a great job modding this player.
