I don't post much on this board anymore, and I assume few current posters will remember my username.  But 10 years ago, I bought a pair of the original RM40s - back when Brian's VMPS user forum was on a different website (which for some reason, I cannot remember the name of  :D).

So, that means my RM40s have the old spiral tweeters, and I got two options (Cherry Flambe' finish and TRT capacitors).  Note I originally purchased a pair of French-made tube monoblocks to drive them fullrange (KORA Cosmos) in a smallish listening area (14.5 x 17).  Upline, I also have a KORA preamp and a Basis Audio turntable - as 95% of my listening has been vinyl.

Well the good news is that this original system is still going strong - with no equipment changes at all.  In fact, the only money spent in support of this system over the past 10 years has been:
-Got a tune-up of my monoblocks last year by a local technician ($300.00)
-Normal periodic replacement of the output tubes
-Replace the phono cartridge three times

All in all, not bad at all.  Deep gratitude to Brian, as as he was a great source of information back in the day (being particularly patient with my numerous questions).  And of course, thanks for a wonderful product!!!  I have no idea how long this current rig will last me (hopefully another 10 years).  But whenever the day comes to replace these speakers, I can assure you it will be with another pair of VMPS.

If you ever get a chance to drive them actively, it takes them up a whole lot, particularly with tube amps.  The 40's are one of the best speakers I've ever heard, when in fully active mode and using tubes on the mids/highs and a big SS amp on the woofers.

Hi Kevin,

We miss you here, glad to see you're still enjoying the RM40s.

I know we talked about a pair of RM50s, but sometimes if your system sounds so good, it is hard to make a big move, and sounds like yours is still sounding good.

Tyson,

Do you think the primary benefit of your suggestion is because of the extra oomph that one cannot get from trying to drive the RM40s full-range with a tube amp??  Or moreso because you are getting the crossover out of the signal chain???
