DIY Polycylindrical diffusors
« on: 18 Feb 2012, 07:12 am »
I'm  looking to build some poly's approx. 2'x 3' for my side wall first reflection points and am wondering what the optimum radius would be?or is it relatively uncritical? Also would filling the rear cavity with mineral wool help to give it some bass trapping properties?
Any links to DIY builds would also be apprecated.

Thanks.

I built some polycylindrical diffusors many years ago and while they worked well
for reducing flutter echoes and reducing bass built-up, one needs a lot of them for
meaningful results.   I used 1/8" tempered masonite stretched over curved
plywood members and were completely sealed (1/4" weather stripping) and
the inside was completely filled with fiberglass insulation.
Material cost was low, time consuming, and stretching the masonite around
the bulkheads was a little tricky.

These are REALLY cheap!

Thanks they would be inexpensive and are probably very effective bass traps however by primary goal is diffusing the first reflection points.

"The Master Handbook of Acoustics" by F. Alton Everest had some detailed recipes for polys but unfortunately I've misplaced my copy. :duh:
