Anyone have the new Van Halen?
« on: 19 Feb 2012, 10:32 am »
thoughts?

A few good reviews I've seen but (and I can say this as a fan) the samples (30sec or so each) on youtube are incredibly dull, and that full song with video "Tattoo" is bloody awful. Maybe I just need to hear the whole thing? Not holding out too much hope.

I didn't buy it. I just listened to the whole album on MOG. I didn't like it, but I am not a Van Halen fan. Whole album sounded to me like constant loudness. Pretty fatiguing to listen to. Most of the songs seemed like they were mashed together clips of their previous songs. None were very catchy. Roth seemed like he screaming throughout the whole album. Someone who is a bigger fan may like the album, but I didn't.

My friend bought it and I sampled it out of curiosity, at first listen I didn't care for it. I kept it a week and listened to it several times and still don't care for it.
(just my opinion)

What a shame, been a fan since their first album.  Is it with David Lee or Sammy?

Dave. And with Eddie and Wolfgang (LOL) on stage it's just a train wreck. The music is castrated, this isn't real Van Halen.

^ BTW in case you didn't know, Sammy is in a much better (but still not great) band called Chickenfoot.

We reviewed it a couple of weeks ago...

I bought it since release and pretty much concur with our editor, Bob Gendron that wrote the piece.  It's decent but not amazing.  Probably would have been a little stronger if they would have pared it down a bit.  But no regrets purchasing it.

Sounds about right. Like it or not, the world has moved on. What will amaze me will be if they can get through an entire tour without the whole thing going off the rails - perhaps that album cover art is trying to send us a message...

My high School fave specially with David Lee.

No offense the new one sounds like Van Hagar.

I heard froma radio station here in Detroit that a lot of the "new songs" were put together from old stuff they recorded back in the day. I heard that Tattoo song and it is SO repetitive...nothing like the first albumn!  :drums:  :guitar:

Maybe if they'd done this 20 years ago the result would be better. Most bands age well but Van Halen is a disappointment.

Yeah, good call.  I could have easily seen this record coming out after Fair Warning...

But it's still kind of fun in my book.

I take back my comment about Chickenfoot. I pulled out the album I have (III) and played it tonight and while more than a few of the songs are kind of corny, with a generic sound, there's other tracks here that range from very good to excellent.

I paid $160 to see the boys and was dissapointed as hell.Kool and the Gang????What was Roth thinking. and remember the words and stay in tune for $160.
Backgrounds and band was awsome.I would like to punch out the sound tech as I thought it sounded like shit were I stood in the ACC.
my thoughts.

That's what.

30-odd years down the road, what were you thinking?

It's not a bad record but they're not doing anything new. It sounds like a typical early VH album.

The best were Van Halen, 1984, 5150, OU812 (my favorite), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (just listen to Eddie's guitar on Pleasure Dome), and Live Right Here Right Now.

I would kill to be able to play the guitar licks on 'Finish What You Started.' I even remember the video back in 1988. It was simple and well done B&W video. Those guys were having fun.

The new album? Meh. Forgettable, as Simon would say.

That is some sweet guitar work on that song. I love old VH, especially the more aggressive tracks. Still think the new one stinks.

The new EVH CD rocks and eddie still has chops, especially song 4, the song where he plays some blues!
