MJK OB Fostex with Eminence Alpha
« on: 12 Aug 2013, 05:10 pm »
Gentleman…. I started these about 2 years ago with ¾ inch oak ply, glued together and cut the holes for drivers. 1.5” makes for a solid baffle but could never get the color of stain on the plywood to look right and was not sure about the base.
So, I tabled it all and built a couple of desktop and bookshelf speakers for members of family.

I figured I better learn how to veneer if I’m going to get the wife to let me put these babies in the living room. I ordered some Zebrawood veneer for baffles and then found a man in town to custom build a base with ¼” steel plate and ½” pipe bracing to hold baffles, then painted with Rustoleum spray. First time I've worked with veneer but I think they turned out OK.

Each baffle started at 20”X40” but knocked one off the workbench and had to trim to 17.5". Each side is a Fostex FE167E with 2- Eminence Alpha 15a.  Using an Onkyo TX-SR805 for preamp, DBX223 for active crossover and Adcom GFA-2535 to run bass and highs.

Now, I would be remiss if I didn’t give all the credit and thanks to MJK for these, cause when he models and posts specs up, you know they’ll be good.  I like them a lot.

Thanks

Stunning!  It would be fun to know your crossover points / slopes.

RJ, I set Low at 200 and Highs at 300 per specs, but can dial them wherever I want.  I think drivers are still breaking in.  Took another picture with the shades up and sun setting on one and shows off the veneer pretty well.

Also saw you had pictures from LSAF.  I went a couple of years ago, I'm a bit south of DFW.

Hi repeddler and all Audio Circle members.
Really, really a nice set of speakers.
Simple and elegant... :thumb:
I wonder if my next project will look exactly like yours?
