Problems using Cary 306/200 as a DAC
« on: 5 Jan 2012, 01:37 pm »
Hi,

I'm new to this thread and hoping someone might be able to help shed some light on a problem I'm seeing using a Cary 306/200 as a DAC.

I am using a WD Live media server and have connected the WD to the Cary via an Optical cable. I have ripped a few disks into WAV files using EAC. I have them stored on a seperate WD disc connected via USB into the WD Live.

My problem is that on most WAV files the first .5 second or so has some very audible artefacts. Many times the artefact sounds like a static pop and sometimes it also manifests itself by almost garbling the start of the song.

By comparison I have hooked the WD Live directly via HDMI into my preamp. No issues found when playing any of the same files. I have also hooked an Oppo player via the same optical cable into the Cary. The Oppo in this case is sending a bitstream output to the Cary. No issue with any of the songs played.

Note that I have loaned the WD disc to a friend of mine who played the same songs via his WD Live box connected into a Bryston DAC and heard no artefacts.

It seems clear that I either have a defective WD Live box (unlikely) or some sort of a problem  with the way the Cary is initially presented a bitstream. Does anyone have visibility of what the root problem might be based on my description? Does anyone have any thoughts on whether there is a remedy for this problem short of selling the Cary and buying a new DAC?

Any help which could be provided would be greatly appreciated!

Regards

/Jeff
