odd labels on older 3B
« on: 3 Jan 2012, 01:49 am »
Does anyone know why there would be 2 labels on the back of my older 3B near the inputs that say "HIGH" on the left channel and "MID" on the right?  I am using it as a second amp to run my front KEF C85's and the right channel fuse keeps blowing as soon as I turn on the amp.  I suspect that the previous owner modified it somehow.

Sounds like something the previous owner put on to identify a bi-amp or tri-amp configuration.  The most likely would have had another identical amp labeled the same way.

so is there a remedy so I can use it as a regular two channel amp?  James suggested contacting Bryston for service which I will do and I wanted to have a better understanding of what might have happened when I talk to them.

Can we go back to this concept of "good" vs "evil" people in audio? I am interested if anyone has some examples of these in their experience. For me, Albert Von Schwiekert is evil (even the "Von" is a lie), everyone at Thiel Audio is good. Mel Schilling was evil, Roger Mojeski is good.

It doesn't sound like a remedy is necessary.  It sounds like a previous owner simply used one channel for the mids of a speaker and the other for the highs (presumably tweeters).  You want to use one channel for the left speaker and one for the right.

As mentioned it looks like someone had it in a bi or tri amp set up.  In and of itself it should have no bearing on why you have a problem with one channel.

Thanks JfTM.  I understand what you are saying and I was looking down the road that would suggest something is amiss inside the unit that is causing the fuse to blow on that right channel.  I am going to double check my speaker wire phase, and try another fuse and if blows on powering up again then I will plan on sending it to Bryston for inspection/repair.
