question about batteries
« on: 24 Dec 2011, 10:10 pm »
Danny you've often said that with battery based gear you would leave your charger permanently attached. I have done this with my amp. However with my Warpspeed I was told leaving the charger attached is bad.

He says that by leaving it attached, you are pretty much using the charger as your PS rather than the battery, and that this can cause damage over time as well as negate the advantage of the battery.

The battery itself is used as the power supply, and not the other way around.

The CTEK chargers that I use can remain plugged in and on with no ill effect.

My Mac Mini is running on a 100 amp hour battery with a 7002 CTEK charger left on all the time. 2 months straight right now without being turned off.

Huh, thanks Danny. Charging going right back on. I wonder what he was on about then, said it sent junky power to the unit when the charger was on. Oh well.

There are many schools of thought on battery trickle charging and it's effect on the long term life of the battery.  In my opinion the convenience of always having a charged battery out weighs the cost of a new battery.  I think I will shorten my battery life by about 2 months.

The other school of thought implies that one can hear the charger through the battery and into the system.  What I had mistaken for charger noise was indeed tube rush.  After the charger was turned off I still had the same tube rush noise.  I have listened with the battery on and off and can't hear a difference.  As the system is new I have been super critical about everything.  I have yet to hear charger noise.  I have a CTEK 3300.  Powereing a Powersonic battery going to a Dodd Battery pre amp.

No noise found!

You might find additional improvements using on of Dave's (PI Audio) battery busses.

Yup, that's something I'm looking at after all is said and done.

Can I modify my amp to "ride the Buss"?
