First timer building some N1 's
« on: 22 Sep 2009, 04:34 pm »
Hey first time poster here.
I am building some N1's and am pretty excited about what I am hearing.
Here is a picture of the cabinets and the finished/unfinished veneer I am using.
I took a small piece of scrap to practice my finishing and am pretty happy with the outcome. I just need to figure out what to do with the final layer to really make it pop.

pic of cabinet...

...and the veneer

Practiced finishing a small piece and came up with this.

Waiting on my kit to come. Have to thank Danny for being a great guy and putting up with my excitement. :duh:

I did notice a pro's veneer job. I think his name was Ron on here. His stuff looks awesome, but it looks like he possibly wrapped his box with a single piece for front back and sides. I was planning on a piece for each edge. am I doing it wrong, and need to order more veneer? heh.

The speakers I built ( Neo 2X) have a 3/8" radius on the front vertical edges. I then wrapped the sides and front with a single sheet of 10 Mil thick real wood veneer. On the Neo 1 and Neo 1X, I suggest going with either a 1/2" or 3/4" radius. Also, suggest using neodyme magnetic grill fasteners too.

Oi! Any tips on the last layer of poly? I am feeling like it looks sort of orange peely.

Also soldering the internal wiring is aweful! I also have never soldered before.

Looks like I may fall short on my internal wiring. Can you buy the stuff in small amounts?

I realized I never got to posting the final product. These guys sound fantastic, I couldn't have been happier with the build.

Here we go...

Thanks Danny.

The veneer is birdseye maple. They look great in person. The one issue I had is on my left speaker the veneer split down the side. You notice it up close. Other than that though I have been super happy with them.
