19" rack mounted components, build or buy?
« on: 31 Oct 2015, 04:12 pm »
Hello, I've been giving thought to audiophile racks for my stereo components of late since what I have just looks unfinished and is also most likely not as sonically neutral as it could be. I've got a nice collection of Bryston 19" faceplate black components with the current 4B SST2 amp, the BP-26 preamp with outboard power supply and the BDA-A dac. I also have a Sony XA-5400ES cd/sacd player and a Wadia 171i digital iPhone doc. In the future I would like to get a Richard Gray or Bryston (Plitron) power conditioner, possibly going to get the latest Bryston digital player, the Bryston headphone amp and a Bryston phono stage. Oh, and how could I forget?- I also want to get the next gen Bryston CD player (or disc drive) since I have been having reliability issues with the Sony. I guess you could say that I like Bryston products  :D. The matte black face plates on the 19" components that I have are very classy in a subdued, heavy duty kind of way. I have been researching audiophile stands and have found some that I like that are all WAY too expensive. I mean $6,000 on up is just outside my pay grade. That said, I think that Sound Anchors or Solid Tech (Rack of Silence) both look doable.

So I just wanted to tap into some collective advice of what rack systems other Bryston fans have used. Can you provide pictures? Would it be best to have a shelf for each component separately or are some of the components OK to stack? With 5 or 6 components already and me discussing getting 3 or 4 more not including the turntable, this really starts to look like a mega stack. You don't tend to see many 9 or 10 shelf racks out there - LoL

I may start with Sound Anchors and get a quote on a custom configuration and based on what they say, more than likely I will be sitting down at my old drafting table and drawing up some plans for a DIY audiophile rack that will be functional and massive. The noise dissipating aspect of it I'm not sure If I will be knowledgeable enough to implement.  I've seen feet and puck like footers that look pretty interesting though they are mostly exorbitant in price. Are there any engineer types who are cheapskates who can provide some plans for highly quiet tweaks? Ones that the average woodworker can produce in the woodshop using standard shop tools? Tools such as table saw, router, drill press, lathe, planer etc.. At some of the eVite cocktail parties I have been to at my local Bryston dealer I witnessed a demo on some Magico 1/2 spheres that were supposed to really lower the noise and vibration to almost nothing. Things like this are for wealthy customers apparently but they did have a noticeable effect. They only hint at the makeup of the materials saying that is is "a proprietary sandwich construction". I saw layers of cork, aluminum and maybe some kind of phenolic. If I had a plan, I could produce some footers with my own experimental sandwich of maple, cork, and anything else I could find at my local industrial surplus.

I'm looking forward to some pictures on other members rack systems. Or maybe you could point me in the right direction on resources of how to build my own audiophile rack. Thanks all.  :thumb:

There's threads like this - http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=137953.msg1471920#new

Odyssey Audio custom built my rack to my design (pic below).  Obviously DYI has cost advantages.

Thanks for the links Phil. I was just looking at the Swedish made, Solid Tech. Very cool designs. Their rack of silence looks so cool, I think the supports are clever in their design.

That being said, it might be worthwhile to try a homemade stand using high quality hardware and quality baltic birch plywood or some nice hardwood.

Nothing wrong with using an actual 19" rack...  8)

Plus having it on wheels means I can move it away when certain someones need it out of sight...
