It doesn't mean anything. I recently read a technical piece written by a guy who basically said they were not that talented musically and explained why.

Enjoy Opeth. I didn't mean to start anything, I should have started a whole different thread with that other band (which I mean to. I listened to one of their albums last night, it had been a while, and was completely blown away.. again).

Just keep talking about Opeth and forget what I said. I might even buy their new album too.

I've been enjoying this album.   I freaking love the music, but I have to say I don't really dig the nihilism and dark spiritualism.   Normally I ignore most lyrics but on this album you can but hear them. I don't normally dismiss other views, but I don't really like anti-religion.

I wanted so badly to love this album but after several listens I have to conclude that it's just not all that great.  Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Opeth (big fan since My Arms, Your Hearse) and I loves me some 70's prog.  But Michael just can't breath life into the music.  His voice is lovely, but lacks color and variation.  There's no life in his singing and absolutely no rhythmic drive to it.  This is very surprising to me since I consider his growl and guitar playing to be quite varied and interesting.  The music is good for the most part, though I feel many songs lack development or lack sincerity (my beef with many of Opeth's ballads) or are just caricatures of 70's prog.  If a 24 year old Robert Plant had sung on this album I think it may have been an instant classic.  Too bad.  Opeth is at the top of their game when playing kick ass metal.  This slow stuff is just too dull.

Sorry to be such a downer.

You should have seen them on the support tour for this album...Picture yourself in a hall surrounded by 1200 people who are all checking their email and surfing the web on their smart phones and occasionally glancing up when it sounded like the band might actually play some metal...which they never did. Occasionally the guitarist would throw the horns and the crowd would just look confused - a real Spinal Tap moment. Ouch. Heritage sounds like a sub-par Porcupine Tree album.
