Back after long hiatus
« on: 21 Dec 2011, 07:21 pm »
Well this year for Christmas I got myself some new toys.   Basically I got an upgrade to my Teres table, including a Moerch DP6 arm, and I just ordered the DIY Hifi Supply Ergo Cole Max LCR phono.

http://www.diyhifisupply.com/node/827

The Ergo Cole has an input for MM (low gain) and an input for MC (high gain).  I confirmed that this means you can setup two arms on your table and switch between two different cartridges (one MM and one MC).

I have a HOMC, the Dynavector DV20XH.   I am considering getting a LOMC once I get everything setup.  I don't really know where to begin.  My first thoughts are the venerable Denon 103 or maybe a used Dyn DV-17D.  My tastes in music is 95% rock.

Hi Josh,
The 20XH is a nice cart and pretty hard to beat.
Personally I doubt you'd be at all satisfied with the two carts mentioned if you're looking for a notable upgrade.
Have you tinkered with the loading?
I preferred 1k ohm with that cart - cleaner highs and more control down below - maybe something to consider?

PS I now run a Denon DL-S1 - IMHO it needed that level of jump to get something better than the DV 20X.

Cheers and welcome back
Dave

Welcome back Josh!
The 17d3 was the first lomc that had me realize the path of my future.
Getting the scale of the concert hall was a bigge for me. Taming the brightness of the Dynavector was a challenge. I moved on to a zyx airy three, which is my current standard. I use a SUT, peerless 4722, they used to be cheap, and they handily beat all the current crop of SUTs I tried.
Good luck, and welcome back.

Most of you probably aren't aware, but Josh was the Facilitator of the Vinyl Circle before me...and that was some 6 years ago or so I think now.  So, it has indeed been a long sojourn away from vinyl for Josh.

I seem to remember it was a house-related move that mothballed your old TT set-up...than maybe general apathy for the trouble it takes to get vinyl set up again set in (?)

Like a smitten audiophool, the music lured him back to vinyl - despite the hassle of dialing it all in  - it's sounds fantastic.

Welcome back, Josh  :thumb:

Thanks for the recs.   I do see one ZYX (how do you say that btw, zeeks?) on a'gon. Its a Kuzma, but supposedly similar to an airy 3S.  That is about the most i'd be willing to pay for a cart.   I am just a little too error prone to trust myself with a more expensive cart.  I had to get the 20XH retipped after a mishap.

There was an airy 3 for sale here forever.
They pop up. I like it too because I am kinda clumsy, it doesn't have an exposed cantilever and it has a great stylus guard.
Plus, it rocks.

Another big reason why I am excited to get back into vinyl is my neighborhood has a huge record store called Sonic Boom.  They have a huge record section (only equaled by some of the stores I've seen in Portland OR) that sells LPs both new and used.  Their prices aren't too bad, especially considering they charge a lot for CDs.

Nice Christmas Josh!!!!  Just out of curiosity, not prying, how much would Santa usually pay for say the first tonearm that shows up when you click on the link jostber posted. My 17 yr old son wants to pursue vinyl and is curious, his guess is $150 (his not mine-I just said "I doubt it") would someone give me an idea of real world cost so I can let him kmow.
This should be good....

The standard DP6 goes for $2,650.  You can sometimes find them used in the $1800 range.  Not quite $150.

Ok, so if you were me, given what you know above, that my music tastes tend towards rock, I have a mostly tube based system and my phono includes a stepup.  What cart what you suggest, new or used ~1200 or less mark?

Current setup is Teres table / Moerch DP6 arm / DIYHS Ergo Cole LCR phono / DIYHS Tram2 OTL DHT Preamp / Audioprism Debut II amp > Tannoy Arundel 15" dual coincentric speaks.

I recently popped a Sound Smith "The Voice" onto the end of my DP-6 and satisfied is an understatement. Might be worth checking out some of their less costly items, they are supposed to be very good value.

Welcome back, it's a winding path but oh so worth it.  8)

Thanks Mike!

I am looking through the cart db, but there are some mixed reviews in this category.  I guess that amount to difference in tastes.   I will set everything up before I pull the trigger to get a handle on the changes, then look to go up.  I want to make a step up from the DX20H, I'll give my critics before as I know I should.  Last I heard it, it was a tad lean and almost bright.  Not badly so, but still noticeable versus my CD player on the same album.  Then again it could be down to my lack of knowledge in setup.    I will learn.
