My dipoles: Progress pic
« on: 5 Nov 2011, 10:49 pm »
The bases are 2.5" thick and the tops are solid Mahogany. Using Peerless 830883 mids, Neo3, and dual AE IB15s per side. A friend is doing a passive network for them and then I plan to use a DEQ2496 if needed. Just thought I'd share.

Thanks,

Blair

Please report when you are further into the project. To me bass will be more than OK giving it the required bass boost,  please let us know bass performance when best EQed, also I play with Neo3W and know what this is like for perfect sound. You should of course go dipole with the Neo3s. All in all I expect you to have a very good loudspeaker.  :)

Hi Erling,

The bass is all there. This is really just the final product. I've had these running for a while. If I was happy at an F3 of around 45hz or so given the narrow baffle, then I could go fully passive, but EQ for the lowest octaves is needed to keep the narrower profile. I'll keep everyone posted as I work on them.

Hi Blair,

did you chop a chair for the mahagony tops?
I, too, am very interested in your final result.

Hi Till,

No, I cut and built them. I wanted sturdy, hence the 1.5" X 1.5" posts, but identical on both sides. Or as close to identical as possible:) I made a backplate for the tweeters today. I'll post pics soon.

Here is the simulated crossover based on some measurements taken this past weekend. I took both of them and they measured identical just to make sure they were consistent. It looks pretty nice.

Hi Blair,

Can you explain the notch on the 830883 mid woofer? What frequencies were you targeting? Was this as a result of some reflection? Can you explain how you are powering the drivers, EQ, etc. Nice project!

Hello,

I'm not a crossover designer, but I can explain what the measurements looked like. There was a diffraction issue in both the mid and tweeter measurements of about 5db up at 1K. Nothing really to worry about with the tweeter since the crossover rolls it off at 4th order. The mid, however needed to havethis tamed down to cross it to the woofers smoothly. He used the new Dayton Omni-Mic setup to measure the drivers and all of them measured very well, so I have high hopes to not have to do anything to them but hook them up and play. The main issue is sensitivity. I suspect I'll end up around 86db on these, so a small amp is a no go. I have a DEQ2496 if I really need it, but I doubt it. The IB15 in quads makes a LOT of bass in dipole.
