Wyred4Sound power amps?
« on: 15 Nov 2011, 12:01 am »
Who knows anything about or has experience with the SX1000 monos or any W4S amp?  Thanks.  They sure are priced right.  Cherry digital amps, too.

I've owned a few:

I'd say they are the most neutral of all the "class D" I have tried.  Not the last word in amplifiers but very good, no noise, no heat, and powerful

I'm interested in the exact same thing!  Looking to move from Odyssey Monos to either the Bel Canto's or the Wyred amps?  We'll see.

I'm not the only Wyred owner here but I have had these in my system, now with the Samsons:

Monarchy SM70 monos
PS Audio GCC500 modified by Underwood
Moscode 401HR
Wyred SX1000 monos
Wyred SX500 monos
Wyred ST250
Dodd 120 monos
BAT VK500
Pass Labs X350.5
Sunfire 600
Rowland 201 monos
Belles 150A Refs as monos
TAD Hibachi monos
Dared VP-20 monos
Cherry 4800A
Cherry Plus
ATI 602
PS Audio Delta 250 monos
Hafler 9130
Hafler SE240
Hafler XL280
Electrocompaniet AW220
Jolida JD202A
AVA something?
Xindak ? 200 wpc
Tube Research Labs Samson monos

The Wyred's have no "sound".  They are neutral.  Not musical.  Not emphasizing any one frequency range.  I found other "D's" on my list to emphasize the midrange and in one case to pretty much only have a midrange.

They don't grunt.  They can be a little dry because they are neutral.  Not dull however.  Watts per dollar are very good.  No strain.  Cool cucumbers.  I never did over-drive them as best I tried.

Haven't owned any Wyred amps but have owned several class D amps.
Bel Canto S300
Bel Canto M300s
Bel Canto Ref500S
PS Audio Trio A-100
Seymour AV ICE Block 5001 (mono blocs)
125ASX2 module in DIY kit.
It makes no sense but my favorite of these amps was the PS Audio A-100. It is the least expensive of the amps, as I am cheap that may influence me.
Least favorite was the Seymour amp. This amp uses the same ICE modules as the Wyred SX500. Wyred pays much more attention to the input signal feeding the amp while the Seymour amp ran the signal straight into the module.
The Bel Canto Ref500S uses the newer ICE module and takes care with the input as well as AC power coming in. This amp is the most neutral amp I have ever heard. Seriously like it wasn't even there. The volume rose effortlessly as loud as I cared with no change in character.

Don't forget another ACer, Channel Islands Audio.  Their amps use modded Hypex modules that have theoritical advantages over the ICE designs.  I scored a pair of the original D-100's from Agon earlier this year and am very satisfied.  Great control of the speakers, loads of resolution (detail and imaging specificity), and huge power supplies (unlike most digitals).

Unfortunately they've gotten rather expensive.

I've owned the ST-500, SX-500, and the Mini-MC5.

BRM's description is spot on.  I'll also add, very dynamic, clean, with the lowest floor noise I've heard.  Neutral, with no sound of their own.  And the best bass control I've experienced.

From what I've heard, the 500's are the sweet spot of Wyred's line.  The 1000's are for inefficient speakers.

Hello, I've owned the Wyred St500. I found it to emphisize the uppermidrange but otherwise a pretty good amp for the money. I have owned several Spectron Digital amps I currently own a Musician II, Its not in my system right now. I have a Modwright KWA150 in my system right now. To compare the amps the Spectron by comparison is in a leage of its own. The Wyred is just not even close to the Spectron, an thats using the binding post on the Spectron. When you use the remote sence cables it really goes to another level. And this is not the current model of spectron. The latested model is in another world beyond the Musician II. I have had the Channel Islands in my system before, there better than the wyreds but still not in the same space as the Spectron. The Spectron is one of the best amps i've heard. My Mod wright is better than my old Spectron but not by a lot. So I know if I bought a new Spectron with all the upgrades it would be better. But I've decided to build a custom amp that I believe will be better than any of them but we will see.

Thanks for letting me throw my two cents in.
